I also posted a thread in the breeding forum but thought I would post here as well. I have 8 WC Altums that are over 2 years in captivity and getting huge. They have recently broke off into an aggressive pair.

Long story short has anyone bred these guys? They are in a large 600 gallon tank with filtered tap water and a drip of 7 gph. Tank mates are stingrays and tiger silver dollars so from what I am told.. the chances of them actually breeding in there is 0% Although I wonder what is so difficult about breeding these fish? What will I need to do to try this. I am not opposed to other tanks, separating etc I am no angel breeder but I am very keen to learn and am no stranger to fish keeping. I have tried to contact a couple breeders I know but all I get is "you will never breed them". So with that... any help?

Altum have been bred in captivity. Look up Tony Tan, he has bred them. It isn't easy water parameters have to be spot on, pH down around 5 virtually no dissolved solids, soft water etc. This is defiantly not an easy endeavor but not impossible.

PS....Chances of them breeding in your current set up is about 0%. You will need a dedicated set up with all parameters met to have a chance of pulling this off. Their requirements are pretty exacting.

Thanks and appreciated. I am trying to get a hold of Tony Tan. I also know a breeder in Canada (Dale Jordon) but they seem to be literally the only ones so don't blame them for not giving up the secret that easy. Any thoughts on tank size if I was to separate a pair?

You could probably get away with a standard bare bottom 20 gallon tall. Use a breeder cone like the ones used for discus and set the tank up the same way a discus breeding set up would be. Let us know what happens.

Oh I was thinking a 90 gallon and was worried about the size of that which I probably will do. These guys are pretty huge so will make sure they are not spooked in anything smaller (in case this may be to big).

If they are that big, a larger tank would be better. I think 90 gallons would be OK as long as the tank has enough height they will be fine even a 35 or 45 gallon tall should do.

Are they really only 2 yrs old? go on angelfish.net and you will find a guy in Vegas that has successfully bred them.

I have 20 of them at good size but heard that they will not be ready until they are at least 4 yrs old.

They guy in Vegas...his name is Mike Troxell. He's successfully bred Altums. His username is 19ghost79 on angelfish.net. He's a very nice guy and will answer questions you might have.

Good luck breeding these as you may stumble upon a very profitable side business.
