Opinions please on large water changes

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
please don't use the c1v1=c2v2 equation, over the equal sign should be a mols conversion factor :D :D

I drip. Drip. Drip. All day. Everyday. Drip. Drip. Drip. If nitrate tests higher than yellow, I'm gonna drip more. All day. Everyday. Drip. Drip. Drip.

I don't like water changes.

This is why you really need to set up a "system" to make water changing a breeze. If it's easy and near effortless, you will be inclined to do it more often. If you're doing via the 5 gallon method, chances are, water changes will be a tedious chore.

It gets easier than just continuous dripping.

What's easier than continuous drip? QUOTE]

It was a question.
Sorry for any confusion.
My post was just a general statement and not directed specifically at Ragin_Cajun

Sorry for the confusion as well :)

Im probably pretty close to what pops pops is doing. I do 2 per week (unless time doesnt allow) 1 fin level and 1 50%

Its probably best to test your water to get a baseline of the amount of nitrates your producing in between wc's

50% once to twice week or as needed for my display tanks. I do have a few heavily stocked fry tank I do 25% to 50% daily.

You need to turn over alot more water on a drip due to dilution tho right? About 150% per week, maybe more? I'm on a water meter and that would be very costly to me...

I don't think so. I drip 280 gallons a week in a 540 gallon tank, and nitrates always test yellow. That's about half the total volume of the tank + sump per week. I'm moderately stocked I think in that tank.

Nah, I was hoping you'd answer with something easier than a drip. Drip is easy, but I'd still like something easier.

Been a while since ive seen those beasts.....hint hint

I usually do a 30-35% water change in all of my tanks once a week. A 220, a 55 and a 30. It's always worked well so I've rolled with it. I feed once a day, just enough pellets to last about a minute and a half in the tank so my waste is pretty minimal. I also keep a limited number of fish in the tank so I'm a little worried about changing large amounts and throwing off the cycle. So far so good, only had one ammonia spike in my time as a tanksmith.

I do two a week. Usually every Saturday I'll do a 75 to 80% water change then on Tuesday's I'll do a 50% water change. I don't have the big messy cichlids but I have 8 clowns, 8 Geos, 5 acara and 2 angels. A full stock for a 125 in my opinion.
