Jag, Midevil, or other

LogiBear, can I just remind you of your opening sentence......

Thinking of redoing my 75.

May I remind you of the title of your thread....

Jag,mideval or other.

you keep saying you don't want to hear about tank size when tanksize is clearly paramount to your question.
I think if you don't like the advice given you will go ahead and do what you want anyway.
From what you have said so far you clearly have no compassion for the fish you keep whatsoever.
Several forum members have told you Your tank is too small for a fish that easily reaches twelve inches.
Why ask these questions? If you don't like the answers you stomp your feet like a spoilt child and say we are all wrong.
I believe the 40 gallon is way to small for your carpintis. but you don't want to hear this do you?
I think it's a real shame that there are so many like you in the hobby that will cram any poor fish in a tiny tank just because you have gotta have that fish.
Sorry to be blunt but I think your choosing to be ignorant of good advice, because it suits you to be so.

You say you want to move on, but you've got your answer.

Yes, many people do over state what I call the "appropriate" tank size for a fish. And yes, fish aren't people, and comparing it to keeping you in a closet isn't a good metaphor. But to say these fish don't think, that they only think of survival, is dead wrong and obvious to anyone who sits down and watches them for an extended period of time. They do play. I've seen a fish rip up a plant in frustration that he couldn't catch a feeder and "throw" it across the tank. And it's not just about that, it's about exercise and well being. Part of being health for every animal is being in good shape. If a fish can't stretch out and swim, it's not going to be as healthy as it could be and YOU'RE NOT GOING TO GET THE PERSONALITY YOU WANT out of it.

Again, I know you want to move on and it's not what you want to hear, but you know what every one here is going to say about it so you have 2 options.
1) Don't talk about it because you know it'll derail your thread...
2) Do something about it! Don't want people giving you crap about keeping a Texan in a 40 breeder? Move it to your 75 with some dither to fill in the space and for it to chase.

Go to your local Petsmart (or other LFS), buy a $6 MiDevil and enjoy every second of raising it. Although they're not going to be true 100% Red Devils, they will exhibit the same interaction, aggression and behavior as a "pure" RD, Midas, etc. If you want to spend more money on a "pure" strain, there are several good online options out there (i.e. Jeff Rapps). In my 20+ years in the hobby, no fish compares to the Amphilophus family in regards to personality, aggression, attitude and fearlessness. They truly are "wet pets" in every sense of the word. I have to say that I respectfully disagree with the above comment about 1 fish in a tank being boring. I love the fact that my large MiDevil has his own 90G to call his home and dominate anything/everything that gets too close.

I've kept and raised several Amphilophus species over the last decade. Below, is a picture of my current MiDevil "Griswold". He was likely a store bought $6 fish from a chain pet store. He is full of personality, intelligence and aggression. I literally have to wear thick "aqua gloves" when I'm doing wc's, so that he doesn't rip my fingers open. If you want an aggressive/interactive fish, you can't go wrong with these.

Different opinions are what makes the hobby :) I agree on the amphilophus displaying the best behaviours etc, I had suggested the smaller alternative species of cichlid to allow for fish interaction with each other :)

Just a thought, but if you did decide to follow some of the advice here; and moved your Texas to your 75, you'd likely see him grow in size, confidence and interaction; boosting all the traits in him that you like.

Speaking from experience, I kept a single Oscar in my 90gallon for a while, and I was shocked at just how quickly the water quality degrades; even with massive routine water changes of 50%+.

I'm talking 0-20ppm nitrates inside of 3 days. In a 40g, a fish like that is going to suffer a slow death, unless you're changing like 100% water each day; in which case can anyone justify that for a fish?

My advice would be to take a couple days and consider some of these factors, it basically boils down to whether you purchase a fish that will grow large, miserable and unhealthy in a 75; that will make your life hell with water changes, or opting to upgrade your Texas, which will give the guy the bigger home he most definitely deserves, improve his size, confidence and interaction; while letting you maintain that with an easy to cope with water change schedule

Hhahahahahaha this thread is hysterical people getting on and preaching to L LogiBear that are currently or have kept fish in similar conditions.....i love it everyone is an expert. Hahahhahahha this is hystetical... people are funny man

And im with convict360 convict360 i too prefer the interaction between fish. A few cryptoheros would look great in a 75 gal

The threads in the lounge and general aquaria discussion have been pretty tense affairs recently.

Thats cool im just saying if you are or have been the pot dont call the kettle black to harshly.

Anyway back to the topic at hand.... op
Look into cryptoheros.... very cool fish with tons of attitude i would think with enough decor/territories could could keep a few in there for life...just go with all males

Upgrade the texas and start a thread to stock the 55, how old are you logi? It's a very newb opinion to think it's OK regarding an oscar in a 40, my 14inch oscar wouldn't ever go into one that's for sure... I would sell a 12 inch fish to someone unless they had a pretty empty 90g let alone a 40g. In the UK you could probably be prosecuted as our animal welfare laws Cover fish and require a suitable home with suitable decoration.

You hate forums because they give good advice that you don't want to here or agree with, why I don't know?
I have made stupid decisions over the years. No one's perfect but please try to remember this is the Internet and people all over the world will be influenced so try to post responsible fish keeping advice.

Thanks.

He looks nice! Only things is ive seen that Oscars dont always have the aggression that im looking for? I know they get very close to the owner for a fish, but do they have that aggression?

Like most of the Amphs get pretty interactive, or so ive heard. But they also have the glass-banger attitude.

Is there anything that makes you recommend an O over something else?

I wouldn't get an Oscar, you will find some that are fairly agressive but for the most part they are like puppies. I like them but they are waste machines and u will end up replacing water non stop to keep up with it. I don't know why but they produce more than similar sized fish. If u want interaction I would go with several semi-aggressive mid sized cichlids that can interact with each other and yourself. A jag or midevil will need to be solo for aggression/tank size reasons. If u are bored of angels / sevs u will likely tire of one fish in a big tank.

I think he meant that you could keep an oscar in a 40 as far as water quality gors he could do wcs everyother day. I dont think any responsible hobbyist would advocate for that. But justarn is right someone might see that comment and think it was ok to do such a thing.

What about putting the fish you have in the 75 and figure out how to stock the 40 breeder. Probably add a mid size fancy pleco to the 75 too.

I wouldnt make the same mistake twice though. 75 would be a bit too small for a jag. If your heart is set on this then maybe look into a loisellei
