can u mix snakeheads in with your preditory fish??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Short answer . NO lol .

Honestly your tank is way to small for what you already have . Unless you have plans to upgrade to something more along the lines of 450+ gallons within the next year then those fish are all doomed as they are quickly going to outgrow it and fights will start.

The jag and oscar will start butting heads with each other and tormenting the others . That jag will eventually win ,the rest will get picked off as well over time because their just isn't enough space.

the channa Aurantimaculata defiantly won't work out in the mix. Auranti don't mix they are far too territorial and there care requirements are not tropical.

Pleuros also won't work, just not enough room The things move like underwater torpedoes , they'll likely have conflict with the cichlids right from the start & unless the aro , knife & ID are much larger then them they'll likely beat them to death young as well.

IF you ditched the cichlids & got a huge tank then you might pull off Pleuro's but I think the success would only ever be temporary at maturity the pleuro might turn on the others.

Have to agree here.
I don't think the tank is big enough for any of these except the cichlids AND I don't mean both in the same tank.

Silver Aro needs more than twice the size tank, and will outgrow that one in about 6 months.
If "ID shark" is a pangasius, you might pull it off for a year, then will slowly need to upgrade to about 10 times the tank over the next few years.
Peacock grows to 40cm for the smaller species, it's gonna die of boredom.
Oscar could work.
Jag could work.
Dat could work depending on the sp.

But to be fair, this is a great size tank for a couple of Channas... Alone. ;)
Or perhaps a few Bleheris?

I've kept plecos and bichir with snake heads. As long as you match the temperature ranges. Other predators or territorial fish is always a gamble.

Thank you everyone for your answers and yes I will be upgrading in the next couple of months just a grow out tank at the moment

My auranti couple killed one of my 3 Delhezi... I had to rehouse the other 2 as they were chasing them whenever they moved.

So even polys and plecs, it's a gamble. ;)

Oh, they also ate an expensive redfin pleco...

I grew out a giant snakehead in with other fish in my 225. it went from 2'' to 4'' in one weekend on feeders. mine was actually very passive and never bothered my other fish, I grew him to about the 14'' mark and sold him when I had to take down and sell my 225 (it wouldn't fit in my new house)
I only picked one up because they are illegal just about everywhere except Alberta and I knew that my 225 would keep him happy for a lot while longer than some of his poor brothers and sisters.

if I had kept him longer into his adulthood he would have definitely attacked other fish and showed more aggression. but with my experience growing one out, it was extremely hungry and would follow you around the tank, but thats all it would do. It never bothered my Giant gourami, Achara catfish, red tail tinfoil barbs or chocolate cichlid.

However the temprement depends on the species, I know that the melanoides has been mixed often in community monster aquaria in asia with very little problems in huge aquariums.
However the Auri is one of the most intolerant of tankmates, some have got it to work, but I honestly wouldn't bother risking your fish. and as many people have said here, all snakeheads are generally better off in their own species aquarium.

Micros turn nasty around the 18-22" mark . Everyone I know who's owned one has reported the same behaviour as above then when they hit that 18"+ mark they snap without warning and kill EVERYTHING in one night.

Also just a heads up they have now put a ban on channa in alberta as well.

I'm not gunnar get one now but thanks to everyone with your support :)
One more thing I'm still new to this how do I post videos
