I remember seeing them in the 80's for $20. Royal plecos were $25. Back then $20 for a pleco was to much, a sail fin was about $4.
Like Jay stated, there are multiple theories. After doing some digging/research, the most believable theory is that the original area where they are collected has been heavily polluted along with drug cartel over running the area and not allowing collecting. It is very strange that you can not find any small ones/babies. Any blue eye you see these days is full grown. Another story which I think is a myth is that a rich white mans daughter was stung by a stingray and apparently fell very ill or died, so then the man paid some locals to poison the whole area to kill the sting rays... which in return killed all the blue eyes. I really wish some investigation was done. I would love for Jeremy Wade to do an episode on it lolthey can be gotten but mostly larger sizes.. from what I have heard the original place they were collected was poisoned... and the second location is heavily infested with drug operations making collection of hem tougher.MikebNJ
I would totally watch a river monsters episode where he is dodging drug cartels and following myths about a rich foreigner poisoning a river. that right there is an emmy. but yea I have only seen full grown animals as well. have they been bred in captivity?Like Jay stated, there are multiple theories.
