Canister Filter Size

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have the 700 and 2

Manufacturers always exaggerate the numbers, just a marketing ploy. Plus, they probably claiming these numbers based upon just the pump alone, no head loss no media involved. This is prevalent in all various industries.
I know but that seems extra high...

I own the 700 and two of the 500. I really like canisters a lot! Whether it actually can do the gph its claiming would be actually easy to test. Just time how long it takes a 5 gallon bucket and do the math from there. I've actually never tested the gph, but I am very satisfy with the strong flow I'm getting, I suppose that's why I own 3 of them......and the price is just awesome!

My point is I don't understand why we need these huge canister filters. The point of these filters is for biological filtration. With all the media in the filter and the items in the tank like driftwood, sand, equipment, and such do we really need that much in the size of a canister? I have seen these canister filters online that are 35" tall.
Canisters are not merely geared towards biological filtration. They can be set up to whatever your preference may be. I use these Odyssea canisters mainly as a mechanical...the biological is just a bonus. I have other canisters set up, loaded with a ton of ceramic rings, as bio filters. Of course, I can easily switch this around, but the Odysseas strong flow is what I want to utilize to remove particulates. Now, my feelings on those super tall Odysseas are that they are merely marketed to impress and look grand and not any higher performance than the CFS700.

So, why do we need bigger and multiple filters? We don't, but more is good in that it provides more room for error. Like you already mentioned, as a back up filter while one is being clean...or needs servicing. I like to have an excess of bio media, should I need to quickly set up a qt or hospital tank. I like the extra water turnover just because I like to see clearer water (less particulates floating around). Once the bb has an adequate time to settle in on everything, you can probably get away with filtering that 240 off a single HOB (depending on your stock level), but your water will probably be full of floating debris. So, if you're ok with this then do it, and save some $ on electricity. The choice is yours.

I have the 2 700s as well. I have one on my 75 African cichlid tank. It does do a great job. I also have one on my 240. I think I am going to get another one on the 240 and another 500 on the 75.

^ I totally agree ....I have multiple canisters and or sump s on my big tanks for that reason. I personally think there is no such thing as too much filteration..... you can always add to help ease maintenance....the only companies I trust in with canisters are ehiem and fluval..... there's features and durability in these canisters you can't get out of cheap canisters..... I have 2 ehiem 2217s that are 7 years old and 1 that is going on 9 with no parts having to be replaced..... I love it

I heard the gasket leaks on a lot of them and the UV is garbage ?....just what I heard/read ....how long have you had it ?

Mechanical filters also have biological properties. It does not have the bio load of a biological filter but a substancial amount of bio matter exist in a mechanical filter.

never had a leak on either of mine, the UV I mean I couldn't tell you if it works well or not haha. They've both been running a year+ now.

I have 3 of the Sunsun units and no leaks or issues, as of yet, after 2.5 years..........not bad for $80, huh?
