Easy To Use Canister Filter

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have 2 Penguin 350 filters.
Dawn, if those 350s are maintaining ideal water parameters and you're happy with your water clarity, no need to mess with what's working. I'm sure you're more curious about canisters more than anything else, but they are overhyped really....and you're not missing anything by not running one

Very true. Just test your water to make sure your bio filtration is where i needs to be.

No need to test the water. If the fish are doing fine and don't look sick or dying, you have adequate bio filtration. For dirty fish like oscar, you need more mechanical filtration. If the water is not clear, or the water doesn't get cleared up 15 min after feeding, you need more mechanical filtration. I hang three Penquin 350 in my 125 that houses two oscar size fish plus 15 other smaller fish. To keep the water crystal clear, I need to replace filter pads in all three filters or about 1 square feet twice a week. Changing filter for Penquin is easy and takes only minutes, so it's no big effort.

Its good to test every now and then as the fish grows. Hypothetically speaking lets say you have insufficient bio filtration testing for ammonia could be an easy indicator of an issue.

Never had a penguin but if the pads have to be replaced that would annoy me. Id rather be able to re use filtrr media

I would do the testing just to confirm bio is adequate, especially as the Oscar is growing.
