Advise for first time motoro ray buyer

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
GTA is very dry right now for any rays but blacks ,publicly. Aside from big Al's and Dragons aquarium. I agree no point buying a Motoro as you will put lots of time and effort just to probally get rid of it eventually once the bug has bit you!

Just my two pennies worth, but avoid a standard motoro. They get massive and are pretty bland looking.
As suggested above, look for a marble, stay smaller, look way way better.
Or go for true hystrix, even smaller but still attain a decent size, great markings.
Don't bother with wild caught especially if it's your first ray, captive bred will certainly be easier for cutting your teeth on ray keeping.

Thanks a lot guys. Responses are really appreciated.

Greatful indeed for the knowledge being shared.

I'm sure everyone will agree with me, we're all in this hobby together and sharing knowledge and experiences is deep rooted with in it.
Nobody wants to see anyone trip at the first hurdle, I don't mean you're not capable of successfully keeping a motoro by any means though :)

Funny you say that, in a PM to the OP I told him I don't like motoros because they are bland, messy, noisy, get quite large, and I am not a fan of their personalities. And then I went on to recommend marble and hystrix. Great minds...

Not sure if I like all the hate regarding Motoros my first Ray was a motoro it fully rolled claspers n stopped growing at 12" , he had similer personality to that of my mini marble I have now , but it was bloody noisy constantly grabbing air from surface

Don't think anyone has expressed hate as such, just sound advise.

My first rays were motoro, I thought they were great. They bred and I was thrilled with the pups. Have fond memories, but I'd never have motoro again. Too bland looking and generally get very big, too big for me especially the females.

if you are interested in motoros big als Newmarket gets then in from time to time from a local breeder, they are usually around $75 at 6" disk so well priced. Personally I feel most of us like our black rays but marble and pearl are nice as well

and Newmarket aquarium is a good store that has more exotic fish, they tend to get rays for a good price as well. They have to beautiful very nice Azuls right now for 75 each around 8"

oh and the rays are captive bred. Motoros are a cheap ray and because of it they are friendly to new people starting out
