Thoughts on Jaguar Cichlid

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Good to hear. I would never keep a fish over 14" in a tank this size and would upgrade it to a 125g or maybe even a 120g due to the 2ft width. But I really didn't see the point in upgrading the fish if it never really got over this size as to me the tank would be adequate. I over filter my tanks considerably, use live plants, and am diligent on weekly WCs. Just wanted others opinions on this as I have no Parachromis experience.

I have also read that people are keeping pairs of Freddy's or Loisellei in 75s long term, would this be a better plan than a solo male jaguar?

Probably too small for a pair of either.

Funny how hard-on we are about tank sizes and fish happiness might as well leave them in the lakes and the stream that they are used to but you will know when his tank is too small and if your anything like most of the keepers on here that tank will be so tiny to you that you will be looking for a bigger tank anyway before the year is up. I wont buy anything under 135 and even thats a waste money unless your getting africans or goldfish

I do try to provide the best care possible for my fish, if I feel he has outgrown the tank in terms of space I will upgrade. I feel a 120G is better than a 125G for a fish over 14" anyway. Im comfortable with a 14" fish in a 75-90G footprint, I have done several species of this size and each have seemed happy enough and the upkeep was manageable for me. No tank is permanent, heck in 4-5 years I plan to not live in my current home anymore so my present tanks will probably all be replaced anyway. I moved 1 year ago and replaced them....wont bother me to do it again.

I ordered a male Jag from Jeff Rapps....fish wont touch pellets. I have tried:
NLS Large Fish Sinking
NLS 1.0mm all purpose
Hikari Medium Excel
Hikari Medium Staple
Hikari Medium Gold Sinking
Kens Shrimp pellets
NLS Flake

Wont touch any of it; only frozen I have on hand is Brine w/Spirulina....fish will eat that. I asked Jeff what he was feeding them he stated various pellets. I have also treated the fish with Prazi Pro in case internal parasites were an issue. I know Jeff treats his fish so I doubted that but gave it a shot.

Any ideas? Fish is 4-4.5".

starve him, he will eat pellets, fish go a couple weeks with out eating fine, eventuly he well eat them. both my jags from rapps, both had to be broke to pellets.

love to see a pic of him. or a vid.

Thanks I will continue to offer a few pellets each day....tank is moderately planted with a ton of trumpet snails so they will take care of the uneaten food. Im going to stop offering frozen until he eats the pellets in this case. How long did it take for yours to eat pellets?

I will get a pic this weekend.

week for the male, about 4 days for the female.

I noticed last night that he picks at random things in the tank so he may be investing a pellet here or there in addition to trumpet snails and plant matter. I think I'll pick up some smaller pellets and fast a few days. Admittedly I am accustomed to fish that demand to be fed and was surprised the Jag didn't, given his look I would assume anything that hit the water would be fair game.
