Vieja/Paratheraps ID?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The guy I bought it from said it was Bifasciatus but i dont any red or any pics on the web that comes close to this. So this is a young Bifasciatus?
I believe Bifa as well. I just grabbed a few and they look almost exact. Except mine have more red around their mouths and gill plates. I'll post pics when I get a chance.

One of the determiners of bifasciata, is that beside the dark line on the lateral line, there is another line/blotch above the lateral line. The "bi" in bifas, color is really not a significant ID determiner, because there are many location variants with differing amounts of red, or other colors.
Below is a rio chacamax variant, note the dark blotch above the lateral line stripe

And one of the main traits to look for in hartwegii (again not color), is an overbite, and since the front of the mouth is not visible in either shot, it would be very difficult, if not impossible to make that determination.

I agree with duanes, this is one of the reasons I believe the op's fish is hartweigi.
It could be a hybrid but I think hartweigi is the closest true form.

Unfortunately, Vieja as small juveniles tend to look way to similar. My opinion is Bifa. Can't say for sure though. Bet they are spectacular, whatever they are.

They all have different personalities. It is so peaceful now in the tank - I guess I will give this guy one more chance to behave or else. I'll let you guys know what happens. And I thought I wouldn't have to deal with this aggression getting out of the Africans!

HAHA really? CA cichlids are jerks just t he same. Only difference is they typically get larger than affricans and have a completely different combat style
