Sweet potato instead of pathos

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There are a lot of variables that go into a plant and nitrate reduction. Pothos has been tried and works. Although other plants might work (some may even be more efficient), there are many other factors to consider:

1) how much light is required;
2) what if any other nutrients are required;
3) how long will the plant last;
4) if the plant is terrestrial, how long until it rots;
5) does the plant release any unwanted chemicals;
6) can the plant be easily reproduced;
7) is the plant decorative if used in a living space

Pothos is known to work under the above constraints. Hopefully others do as well.

Only issue I see is the water temperature, if you run you tank in the 80's; you may see some root disease like pythium. If your tank runs somewhat cool the potato should do well.

I have 2 Avocado pits, mounted on my planted tank with 4 Shishkabob skewers holding them up 1/2-way out of the water. Haven't rooted yet, but won't be long. They grow in tropical climates, low-light.
