Having restarted my monster comm tank; wolves or Hoplias were always part of the plan.

Having kept both Curu and Aimara before; I started out with two malas and added a tiny Aimara later (didn't work out).

Back of my head, an active wolf like Curu feels right for the comm. After searching for weeks; finally managed to bag one for the tank. Estimated size around 13-14 inches. Very active but thin and weak after 2 long trips in bags with a short break at the LFS.

So happy with this guy:

Will take more pics as i progress to nurse him to optimum health and fattened up nicely.

Looks nice and settling in so far.

Thanks. :)

He is still behaving well with other mates. The large Mala did came, inspected and flared a bit but as some of the other inhabitants swam by (Oscar, Pleuro and Cuban gar) their attention were diverted.

Guess part of a comm tank success is too have a couple of neutral, large sized fishes that could either spread the aggression or divert the attention.

He might bother the malas. And that's not good since they're at a significant size disadvantage... I hope he behaves well for you. He definitely looks good. If you are looking for an even more active wolf, you can try to find a gold wolf, one guy had a large curupira with a small group of I believe 3 golds, it was a nice set up imo

A quick update:

Chilling out with the large Mala.

Noticed the difference in color between the pic above and this? That's what I love about Curupiras; their colors changes from dark - two tone - light brown constantly. Amazing.

Pretty addicted to wolves I must admit. :)

My friendly LFS told me there could be a good size Aimara (Venezeula variant) available next week. More or less 10 inches.

Part of me wanted to get it and try to comm but I am worried that the fish might disrupt the current peaceful environment. I do not have a spare place to house it in case hell breaks loose.

Any thoughts?

Give it a go if you think you have the space and are able to take care of everything properly.

Should be good. U got enough other fish to deter any Aimara from going crazy. Pluse like moe as long as u got the space.

Eventually it or the other fish will need to be moved.

Thanks guys. Was told the Amapa variant are normally less aggressive but they cost a bomb over here....not to say Aimaras are cheap to begin with. Will really need to think this thru before committing.

I see a few guys here who managed to do so successfully and the key factors (IMHO):

The Aimara must be smaller (not much) than other tank mates.

Large tank with a lot of other fishes.

Well fed? LOL!
