600 gallon fiberglass tank with window

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It looks cool! I can't justify it for the cost though. They are expensive. You could make a really nice plywood tank, epoxy the inside blue, and save 1/2 the cost or more. Including filtration, ect.

Making a plywood tank at this size would cost about 2/3 of the price of this.....but why risk it leaking and going thru all that trouble not to mention that this 600 gallon fiberglass tank weighs about 300 lbs ......if you made a plywood tank this size you would never be able to move it.

This is the better option in the long run

I wouldn't say you wouldn't be able to move it... Would weigh less than a glass tank that size probably. I have seen glass tanks 10x4x2.5 lol now that would not be able to be moved once in place.
Maybe 2/3 the price if you went with a starfire or thick acrylic front panel.
Wood is cheap especially if you have a family member or know someone who is a carpenter lol. From builds I have seen on here, people overdue it with bracing in alot of instances. Could definitely shave off some weight if needed. If you are not handy I could see being worried about it leaking, but if you do the job right the first time, you should have no issues. I'd be worried about bumping that fiberglass and cracking it during a move. I'm sure it's pretty thick though.

I'm not bashing your tank bro it looks nice. Don't take it the wrong way, I'm just kind of talking put loud so to speak.

I love your tank, looks fantastic and a great size that will allow your rays to spread their, well, their wings :)

I have 'liked' the last two posts as I sit on both sides of the fence on the comments/issues raised.

Before my first child was born, almost six years ago I built a ply tank, internal dimensions were approx 6'6" long, 4' front to back and pushing 5' deep, plus a sump on the side.
It had a huge acrylic window and myself and father fibre glassed it.
The tank was fantastic and without fault for a long time.

Fast forward to present day. I now have two small kids, my business is extremely busy and my spare time is zilch.

I am progressing to having a large pond/tank again as my 7'x30" tank is becoming too small.

On one hand I wish I had the time to build my next big pond/tank but I have such little spare time that a self build is never going to be an option, this is why I will definitely buy the tank from a manufacturer - dimensions not decided 100% but around 8x4x4' - even if it costs me a fair bit more. I don't have the time but I do, in theory, have more expendable cash than my original self build.

I'm also a big fan of 'plug-in and play' kinda stuff so if I can go buy a professionally built pond/tank and get it delivered and filled the same day that's what I'm gonna have to do, no matter how much I'd love to put my skills to good use and revel in the self satisfaction of building the tank myself.

Each to their own. All that matters in this thread really is that the new upgrade SandNukka15 has got is *****in'!

Agreed! It's a bada $$ tank! I totally understand not having the free time to build a setup as well!

By no means am I against plywood tanks I just personally wouldn't make one unless it was 1000 gallons plus bc in that case u won't be moving it

As far as these tanks breaking they are very durable you would literally have to drop it multiple feet in the air for it to crack in which case it might not even do that.

My guess would be a plywood tank of this size done well would be around $1000 .....my guess would be around 500-600 lbs empty
