OK, so I have a 125 gallon tank, only 7 fish in it, and over the last 10 days my water has been getting really cloudy, I mean 24 hours after a 25-30% WC it is noticeably cloudy. It never has done this before, established tank. My 5-6" peacock eel, which had previously been very visible and sociable has been missing for 2+ weeks, and now the tank smells distinctly of dead fish. Logical conclusion is that he died somewhere buried in the sand, of which I have approximately 2" Carib sea Tahitian moon black sand. I have taken apart filters, cleared filter lines, taken out every decoration(3x!) and sifted though the sand in the tank 3 seperate times and for the life of me I cannot find this dead eel. Does anyone have any tips(other than siphon out 120 lbs of sand) or tricks to find this bugger? Really not enjoying doing water changes every other day to keep the tank clear and I can't imagine having a rotting eel is good for the fish either.

If you have wood look in the crevices and holes, I had a cat rotting away in mine, as Convict says, stood retching for a good few minutes once I go it out.
Check your ammonia levels, could get a serious spike, add Seachem Stabilty or similar if required.

Oh the retching, I played this game when my dominant male cray decided the 40 gallon breeder was his and stashed all the bodys in his cave.... I just threw away the substrate lol.

keep sifting, you'll find him; then about 5 seconds later the spontaneous retching will kick in
Yes and I hope that the tank is situated in a well ventilated room lol.

Yeah I've been monitoring numbers, still good at 0/0/10 or so, and when I stir up all the sand looking stink doesn't really get worse, almost makes me think filter but i checksd both. I just can't find the damn thing
