What are they? Festae MAY be included here, despite recent genus changes, and any others still "in question" for the genus. Please include new updated taxonomy if possible

I would say chancho, trimaculatum, amarillo, citronellum and festae since we're including it here. Hogas could probably also make the list. I think it comes down to individual specimens after chancho and trimac. I do believe trimaculatum will be reclassified if it already hasn't and and to my knowledge festae has.

Here's the taxonomy history from Cichlid Room Companion:

Heros festae, Boulenger, 1899:6, original combination
  • Cichlosoma (Parapetenia) festae, Regan, 1905, new combination
  • Cichlosoma festae, Regan, 1906, new combination (Parapetenia)

Sorry to derail...

Ive heard Festae called an Amph species a lot before... They show little similarity so idk if they were actually moved there, but lots of people have referred to them as an Amphilophus.

I have only ever know them as Amphilophus festae.....until joining here, i thought they were for sure and i was also told they were one of the 6 fish that can be used in making Flowerhorns

Never heard of a festae making a flowerhorn. Vieja, Texas, Trimac, Midas, RD, BP,KKP, Mammon, Rose Queen, Convicts, and many more can make a flowerhorn.

I maybe wrong but never heard of anyone using one.

Can A Red Terror and a Red devil make a viable pair? If its classified as an Amph it should.

I was always told a FH could be any or all of Red Devil, Midas, Three-spotted, Chocolate, Red-Headed, and Red Terror

Lol lots more than 6 fish can be put into a FH

Mostly you would get Midas (considered better in color than a Red Devil, but both are used) and Trimac mixed with a lot of other things, commonly Redheads. However "Flowerhorn" is a veeerrry broad term, seeing as many of the Asian breeders use different fish to make the FH (FLowerhorns are much more highly valued in a lot of Asian countries, good luck charms i guess?)

So basically anything can be ised in making a Flowerhorn as it is basically another word for hybrid at this point. Maybe when it was new and had a specific recipe of fish to produce them you would be stuck with a limited list, but not anymore. There are many different kinds of FHs and many things to go into them.

Things like Blood Parrots, however, have less variation in the species used to make them. There are more than 2 im sure, just because there is a variation in color and body shape that, IMO, is slightly larger than most species. But it is a very unique shape that probably only has a small amount it can change before it loses that.

Also, Festae can breed with pretty much all CA. So yes they could be in the making of FH but ive never heard of them being used commonly, they are a relatively uncommon, large, slow-growing, and aggressive fish which doesnt make them practical to mass produce either as themselves or to put into Flowerhorns.
