It's all about the speed cycle. I just tried a fishless cycle because I didn't know what I wanted to stock on my new tank and I seeded the new canister with about 4 bio rings from my GT tank. I added 4ppm ammonia and more once it started going down. The tank fully cycled in 5 days this way so it's definitely faster just to plop fish in and move a filter over.
