Nothing much to update on my end. Mine eats 1-2 times a week, other times ignores food, has a full belly ~all the time and almost isn't growing. Still 99.9% drab. Colors up rarely.

What?? So sorry to hear that. Do you know why? You had just posted a video of him eating tilapia like a champ.
I hope it was not one of those unexplainable sudden deaths. Hate those. Can learn almost nothing from that.
What's their expected lifespan? Surely not under a year but wanted to see if anyone knew.

Well that happened again, much worse this time, I think. Here is how it went down:
I feed my fish at night and I always fed the perch last and the whole time he is near the front of the aquarium like an attack dog getting ready to pounce (the excitement went down considerably after his previous injury but was still pretty intense).
So I put a 4" piece of tilapia in his tank and he pounced so hard that he hit his head again pretty bad, but managed to eat the tilapia. Put another piece of tilapia in after about 5 mins and he ate that as well. But like last time, he couldn't balance himself and I didn't think much of it at the time (because I had seen him like that before so it didn't affect me as much). Fast forward 24 hrs, I open my 240's stand door (his tank is under the 240) I see him floating, lifeless.
So the death was due to a head & swim bladder injury. As to how it exactly happened, here is my speculation:
Previously during his recovery period he would try and stay upright but couldn't for a long time (I had to handfeed him for about a month or so). He would try and move fast to get upright, sometimes hitting the glass again. So I think he tried to move fast again, succeeded and hit his head hard again. This time fatally hard.
Oh yeah, I forgot about his head injury...

These two observations make me think yours was a much more zealous feeder. Maybe the tank size matters too - mine has always been in a standard 240 gal.

I've lost mine too. Suddenly. I think either the water's been too soft (KH and GH ~2-3 degrees; just recently I've started raising it slowly) and/or the temperature got too high.
FishBase says up to 22 C = 72 F whilst mine has been in mid 80-ies for 3 months. Now that I think back, it looks like the change occurred mid Spring, which makes sense. Too warm.
His belly looks like accumulated some liquid, very soft and liquidy under skin. Now the reduced appetite and swollen belly and no growth make sense. Wes and I thought it was worth a shot.

. I had my guy in 80 degree water for a very long time with no ill effects (that I know of). The only reason I put him in a heater less tank was because I wanted to reduce his growth rate. And I think it had to do with the KH & GH more than the water temperature.

I am saying mine was 80-84 F in April, 82-87 F in May, 84-89 F in June.
