VATF: How long would it last?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
By the way, Red Aimara Red Aimara , what is that beast under the drift wood? :O
Either the perspective threw me off, or that thing is huge!

Good to hear that. :)

I have a slightly different thought here though. I know there are many hobbyists with big tanks and ponds - real dedicated ones.

But going thru the forum, I realised something: there are too many 3 footer ATFs or dorados kept by hobbyists. Not to say they do not have the tank space available.

But keeping fishes will always have it's unforeseen circumstances. We got to deal with power outages, PH crash and ammonia spikes. A particular fish may go crazy and kill the tank mates.

The thinking is: there is no certainty in this hobby. Of course I would not advise one to get a RTC and put it into a 50 gal tank.

But with moderate size tank space and filtration; I would encourage one to go for a species that is desired. :)

I can see what you mean, though, and I have been guilty of that.
The feeling of giving away my Jar, or even my Silver before I got the big tanks made me feel like poo tho xD

But even with your "way" I don't think a Dorado or a vatf would last very long in a 180 uh? (Dammit, i'm starting to feel like the guy hoping at least ONE person says 'go for it' and disregarding everyone else's opinion...)

With Dorado, you need to find one that has really good temperament. My feeling is a lot of hobbyists gave up on their dorados due to their aggression and constant harassment of tank mates. You might have to give it up before it gets to tank busting size. LOL!

A GATF or perhaps FATF might be more suitable. GAFT has slower growth rate than the rest and FAFT probably max out around 12-16 inches?
(I am keeping a 12 inch FATF with the rest of the ATF at the moment and it is eating like a champion - I do really want to see how it's growth potential is).

Back to GATF, I could the possibility of getting it to 15-18 inches even with a 180 GAL - proper diet and good water management.

At that size, I am pretty sure you will either:

a. Get a bigger tank to showcase it.

b. No shortage of buyers - good size GATF are hard to come by.

Hahaha. There I go being the bad guy to convince you. :D

You and Vincent to be honest. I've always silently stalked his tanks, he's basically got anyone's dream in his house alone. xD

Problem with GATF is their maxed out size. I could foresee myself getting a tank suitable for a fully grown VATF eventually, if I come to like it, but a GATF? No way xD

Besides the temperament of the Dorado, though, are the size requirements identical to ATF?

As for FATF, I have yet to find one in Belgium...

Vincent's tanks and inhabitants are a big inspiration to us monster lovers. :)

I would say the size requirement are more or less the same for ATF and dorados - based on the sticky guidance.

Urg, I hate you.
I don't but I do! ;)

I just sent a request for the most recent stocklist of the biggest German importator, wonder what I'll find. >.>
