Hello all as the title says I am new to keeping new world cichlids have been a lurker on this forum but since finally putting up a tank I can post. My son and I are starting up a 90 gallon tank we found on Craigslist with a 30 gallon sump. I bought some driftwood, a few river rocks and fake plants. Now for the stocking ideas I have always wanted a Oscar and my son Loves the electric blue Jack dempsey.
1. Red oscar baby, EbJd baby, and maybe a single sevrum. Unsure if this is to much.
2. The oscar and EbJd, but maybe red maculipinnis, and a Red Tapajons.
3. Oscar and EbJd only
Other question should I go out and buy a powerhead for this tank it is a standard 48 inch 90. Also food wise pellets, bloodworms, maybe a veggie pellet anything else that would be a good treat for them?

I think full grown the oscar and the ebjd will fill the 90 out nicely. I like to run a powerhead, but not 100% needed. Pellets are a good staple, I like nls and hikari bio-gold, but there are plenty of good ones out there. As small fish blood worms and mysis shrimp are good treats. As they get larger you can give them krill, cut up raw shrimp as treats. Sounds like you're on the right path. Best of luck.

Thank you for the reply what about Dither fish? Are they needed I see many people having Giant Dainos, or barbs?

Just my opinion, but EBJDs are not the easiest fish to keep. When young, I have found them to be quite fragile and challenging to keep alive, especially when they are in a community setting and aren't the most active fish in the tank. I have found them to be outcompeted for food and easily stressed, which inevitably leads to problems. A similar fish color wise, but more hearty and easier to keep, would be an electric blue acara. They are readily available and more resilient than the EBJDs.

Giant danios are a good choice for dithers.

I will have to look into that unsure if I can convince my 12 year old haha. If he is hell bent on one would a grow out tank work for him? I have my sons old 30 sitting around. Put him in there or would the baby oscar take over the whole 90 while we had the EbJd in the 30?

Agree on the EBJD being fragile, not sure if they can survive with the O , EBJD's are slow growers and will get easily stressed out.

also, I can't see a large dempsey and a large O living together, alone, peacefully in a 90 long term. If i were you, I'd either go with one wet pet solo. or go for a small community or pair. community could consist of many other fish, just not the cichlids who get 8+ inches and like to be boss lol

Hmm back to the drawing board. What is the minimum for say to oscars?
