Fish can recognize human faces

My old rays used to swim up and down the front of the tank when i came by (driven by food of course, hand fed shrimp), but they didn't do that for anyone else.

hopefully this dispels that obnoxious myth that fish have 10 second memories.

I thought the myth was like 5 minutes. Either way it's not true.

Cool article. I definitely noticed my fishes are more alert to me attending the tanks compared to my wife. Im guessing they know she never feeds them so this can be the case.

Science is taking its sweet time catching up don't cha think? ;) :P
Even my silver dollars (the "dumbest" fish I have) beg at the front of the tank every time my hubby or I enter the room, half the time I don't even think they have time to see our faces before they start begging! :D But whenever one of our friends enters the room they dart down into their "plant wall corner" and hide until they (friends) leave the room again. My goldfish however will beg for anyone but get a little extra "wiggle" in their tails when I approach the tank. :)

Most of my fish react the same to all humans, but my sunfish, ram, leaffish, and bettas can definitely tell the difference. What's more, one of them -my warmouth- appears to understand that if I put a mask on while standing in front of the tank, I haven't suddenly vanished or turned into something else.

I love that you know this haha

All of my Angels do exactly the same, but I most see it from my breeder pair. They will swim up to the front of the tank and start to "wiggle" their tails. I also see this from my smallest Firemouth.

I also tend to see that my Betta is smarter, or at least wants more food than other fish. I've trained him to swim out of his Betta-Cave and to the surface of the water whenever I knock on the tank. I can walk up to the tank, knock three times, and by the time I have the food he's already waiting.

I actually tested this. If I put a mask on out of the room and walk in, the warmouth acts like I'm some other human. If I stand in front of the tank and put a mask on, it keeps acting like it recognizes me, so apparently warmouths (unlike babies) understand that the person is still there even if the face is suddenly hidden.
