Where are you taking the hobby

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nice! Do you have a thread on here with pics of the Vatf? I love Armies just not sure how one would get a long with the Vatf. My Arm's used to shank most silver fish I put in with them. Ignored a much larger Silver Aro but shredded my Vulpinus and SD's. I've only kept two Armies thus far so I'm no expert.

Yeah I have a thread for him. I've been tracking his progress since I picked him up last sept.

Only planning on preds for my 75, pink tail characin, african knife and delhezi bichir then some shrimp and or micro gold plecos for my 5.5 and last bigger accommodation for my goldfish.

Apart from that I wont really have the funds or space to set up another tank, or the time that I have spent looking for a working pred comm (6 months)

Current plans are to grow out the SA juveniles I have in a 75 to go for a nice SA tank with heavy driftwood and hopefully a few giant swords if the severum dont eat them.

I am going to be moving the 5 grow outs in that tank, plus a few more, to a 180 or larger and doing something a little different with the tank. I'm planning to build a really nice canopy with a cutout in the middle that incorporates a hanging hydroponic basket. A separate small pump will move water from the sump/tank up to the canopy and deliver tank water to a mix of plants that should grow well in these conditions. It should help keep nitrates a bit lower and will give a cool raining effect to the aquarium. Ideally I hope that the nitrate removal will allow for water changes every 10-14 days if possible. Additionally once the canopy gets covered in dense foliage it should look really awesome.

Other than that, I am going to build a double 55 gallon rack for my c. nanoluteus and c. panamensis grow outs. I have 6 of each species and will probably move out extras to end up with 2 trios if having 6 ends up with aggression issues.

Second project will be moving my green terror into the 75 gallon where the south american grow outs are living now to give him a bit more space.

Once that fish is moved I will have my very sweet 55 gallon acrylic setup I bought a couple months ago empty. I am going to probably do a heavily planted tank in there and keep it as my only planted set up. The stock will probably be dwarf pikes. The other possibility with this tank is doing a biotope for one of the more colorful thorichthys species if the tank is big enough to support a small group.

The only other projects I may take on in the next 6 months is building a 3-high 40 breeder rack but I have to make sure that my time will allow maintenance of 3 more tanks. With the above mentioned plans I will have 5 tanks going which may be my limit for now.
Yeah cichlids and plants can be a pain but I've got my fingers crossed for you. What kind of Sevs do you have?

Sounds really sweet. The rain effect would also be great for surface agitation promoting gas exchange as well as perhaps be a soothing sound to listen to. You've gotta make a dedicated thread to either the build or the finished tank.

Are you going to be attempting breeding the nano's and panam's? Any dithers planned?

Green Terrors may not be rare but man can they get gorgeous if well taken care of. I know I miss mine. Your Terror male or Female?

I vote pike but hey I'm a Creni fiend as of late. Though I have to say going with thorichthys would still make for an awesome display. Only issue might be the Thor's constant sand sifting possibly uprooting plants. It's one of their best and worst traits just like Geos.

Hey sounds like your plates full for now and your concepts are sweet. Concentrate on them and then take time to relax and enjoy the fruits of your labor. The next project can wait while you do.

I will have motoro rays in my pnd and possibly leopoldis. I was thinking of using bakki showers as the filter and building a sieve as a pre filter.
Bakki Showers hmm, and a custom pre-filter sounds pretty cool. Can't wait to see what it looks like.

Yeah I have a thread for him. I've been tracking his progress since I picked him up last sept.
Sweet, guess I'll have to look him up.

Sounds like a plan. Always wanted a pink myself. I'd stick with the shrimp for the 5.5 IMHO they'd be more then interesting on their own. By the way what kind of goldfish have you been keeping?

Texas321 we will likely breed alot of new world cichlids that are less common here. However we have plans for other fish too. It is actually rare to see alot of the fish mentioned here in Alberta. Most people have African cichlids like peacocks and more common Mbunas. So our choices are pretty much wide open right now My wife is getting a good reputation for haveing different good quality fish. This hobby has really got a hold on us in a good way.

I am going to build an aluminum frame for the bakki showers and i am going to use plastic planter boxes. I am going to use cermedia in the bakki showers. Cermedia has the highest surface area and is the most effective bio media you can get. I will probably only make the bakki showers 2 or 3 tiers. The sieve will filter out particles down to 230 micron. Then it will go to the bakki showers and then back into the pond. I need to get my moving bed koi pond filter working good and get a lot of other projects done, and then i am going to build a greenhouse. I am planning on building the pond in the greenhouse. It is not going to be for a while, probably not at least for another year because i have a lot of projects that i need to finish. I'd like to use a bottom drain in the pond, but i am not sure if that would be good since i plan to have rays. I am also going to build a shallow ranchu pond in the greenhouse because i have a spare pond mag 9.5 still in the box.

I have 17 single tail comets in total residing in my 75 for about one more week.

I started with 12 little ones outside but 3 got eaten by birds when the cover blew off and the rest I still have a year later.
In total:
1 shebunkin (Jeremy)
1 Sarasa comet (Bubbles)
2 orange commons
5 yellow commons (fat one called Titan)
8 small black commons (had for 9 weeks)

Then here is my Betta. Wish I had a better camera but he has exploded with blue colouration since I got him. I spent a bit of money on the 'dragon rock', anubias, java fern and Christmas moss1466332819233-1956668999.jpg

Thanks man! I was the same way with the Comm's. The upgrade sounds cool, would love to hear what you've got planned. Tank size, filtration, scaping, etc. I always wanted a Poly tank but I've had bad luck with them. Usually because I chose their tankmates poorly. I know what your saying about cichlids and I moved onto Oddballs as well for the same reason. Problem for me was they're just too many oddballs. They're was always something new or not often seen catching my eye. Between that and a lot of times unknown temperaments, some being pred's and the size differences they where available at time of purchase I ran into new problems. Then again I have no elf control when it comes to this hobby, so hopefully you'll have better luck then I.
Tank size will be avarage for mfk standars probably around 350gal 96x36x24. Hoping to place the order at the end of the month.

The plan is to have it as easy to maintain as possible, keeping the stocking on the lighter side. I want it to be simple. Maybe one big peice of dw. Filtrarion will be a sump, really happy that a bunch of other members spent the time helping me learn about them, my back thanks them (no more canisters) lol

This thread is interesting, its cool hearing about everyones future plans.

One thing im doing is keeping substrate minimum, my brother had a 1,5 inch gravel bed in his 15gal and the waste was ridiculous from all his little fish

Sounds cool. I've always loved Gars. What species are you planning on keeping(Rays and Gars)?

Right now for gars I have Cubans, longnose, floridas, and 1 small alligator gar. Long term I will probably be sell off the gator. I would love to track down some tropical gars and short nose gars.

For rays right now I have motoros, 1 low grade marble, 1 superspot and some regulars. Henlei rays have really captured my interest and are something I would like to try in the future. Some of the castexi variants are also pretty interesting. Locally there is a seller who brings in a good amount of rays. He's supposed to do an order soon so I'm hoping he brings in something cool. In the past he has brought in tiger rays, castexi. He was also looking into suppliers from Paraguay last I talked to him.
