In Aus, owning a firearm is a privilege and not a right, its a privilege that has to be earned+maintained and a privilege that can be removed from you if you abuse it. You need to do a firearms safety course (1 day nothing serious) have somewhere appropriate to store your firearms+ammunition (heavy or bolted safe + locked box) and you need a legitimate reason for owning it (Target shooting or hunting are both legitimate reasons for rifles/shotguns and target shooting is the sole legitimate reason for owning pistols)
self defence is not a legitimate reason. and TBH i'm glad its not. I know i wouldn't feel safer with random strangers walking around with guns.
The 10-22 isnt "Banned" but it is alot more restricted than a bolt/pump/lever 22, but you could buy it with a legitimate reason, like being a landowner with pests to cull or a professional culling company.

I will be careful to refer to the 10-22 as restricted from now on.
In Canada we are not far behind Australia for pistol ownership. We have no right to personal protection outside of our homes. Even inside of our home you had better have real good proof of needing to use lethal force. The only ones safe here are the criminals. We even get punished if someone breaks into our home and steals our firearms.
