Florida Cichlids...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Feral typically means they were released from captivity into the wild, which could be the case. However, most likely these are breeding populations (originating from feral specimens). that you would be catching. Either way feral/introduced/non-native/non-indigenous...all synonymous for the purpose of this thread. I think the most honest way to label these is to include the collection point (including FLorida as mentioned above). Wild caught fish that typically are more valuable are those collected at their native habitat.

Ahhhh see I've never heard a fish referenced as feral. Ive heard of dogs and Cats, but never fish. Keep in mind this is all hypothetical considering its not actually something I plan to do. Just something I was pondering. So Technically their feral fish. And Wild fish would only be considered in their native territory? What about those same cichlids that have made their ways into different parts of South America? You hear of the same species of fish coming from multiple different areas there. I'm sure not all of them are naturally occurring. But some have migrated to new areas and made themselves homes there. And now we consider them "native" to that area.

Natural migration and being introduced by human interactions are very different.

I'm from New Orleans and Texas Blues are literally in every bayou in the area. No one should ever purchase one in this area. There are free ones to be had all over.

Lol I'm actually just learning that you can catch midas and jags here in florida. I've know about the mayans and Oscars and pleco's for a long time. But the midas and jags are news to me. FwC recommends eating them or cutting them up for bait. Seems sad to me lol

By definition you could call them wild caught although they wouldn't have any of the benefits of true wild caught fish because of the very limited genetic diversity present...

So I live in South West Florida, and I was just curious. If I go out and travel south abit and catch a Midas, Jag, Oscar, Mayan, ect ect in a Canal. Would it still be considered wild caught? Because technically that's wild caught... However it would have originated from a pet store breed stock since they are non native species. Just something I was pondering while setting my minnow traps yesterday.
"Feral" would probably best describe the version, however it would be much closer to WC in appearance and behavior

Yeah, I'm gonna make a trip down just to try to catch a few. Just to take pictures and say I did. Sounds like a fun trip to me.

Could be fun.....funny, I had a dream last night reminding me of my childhood in the keys, fishing from Marathon and hooking fish we swear were too big to be this close to shore/reef....

....much better things to fish for when you live in S. FL. lololol Gimme some Grunts, some heavy-duty hooks and point me towards the Groupers and I'm not even thinking about Cichlids until I get home to feed them :D

Strictly my opinion.

Haha I actually Mate on a fishing boat called Outlaw. We go all over and fish for lots of different things Marlin, Sails, mahi, ect ect. So I've caught plenty of Big fish. Sometimes it's the unusual stuff that is more exciting to me. Ha

I love Ultra-light tackle....i'm sure catching a 18" Jaguar on Trout tackle w/ 4lb test is at least as fun as Bass fishing. I was just telling another user here about when we used this type of tackle to catch Bluefish in NJ while we had other lines out farther w/ big rigs for sharks and Striped Bass while working crab pots and handlines plus umbrella nets to keep our bait nearly endless - all at once. Why don't you ever post in the Fishing forum? Love to see some fish from FL , been so long since I got to hit any SW-fishing spots.

Pushing your limits w/ UL-tackle is my favorite part of fishing. Even w/ 20lb mono, a lot of guys tell us we go "too light" for monster Flathead Cats
