I'm the worst. I just leave the bag in for 20, cut it, and dump the whole deal in there. I must be lucky.

That's what I do and I've never had any issues with it. Now granted I only buy fish from my trusted LFS's that all have high water standards.

Still I think this fanaticism with waiting any longer than 20-30min with bag in water to introduce fish is not taking the fish in the actual bag into account.

-A cycled aquarium already is able to readily break down any ammonia in the LFS bag water

-If anything the LFS bag water upon entering tank will help the new fish acclimate to your tank better, not the opposite. To think the opposite is true is actually the illogical assumption if you think about it (at least to me)

I believe the fanaticism that has created the hour-long mandated processes is the assumption that all fish are coming from Petsmart or big chains full of ICK. I believe that's a naive assumption. The hobby has matured. The LFS's I buy from all have near religious water standards and or years old filtration systems full of trillions of BB. The idea that you can't trust your LFS is, I believe, actually if anything causing fish more stress. Who buys fish from a place with dead fish in the tanks? Who buys fish without checking all the tanks in the store first?

It just seems people have reached a fanaticism esq level purely based on hypotheticals which if you're doing your due diligence do not apply.

I always quarantine, I put some tank water in a bucket then dump bag contents into bucket. Add.more water after ten, repeat and then usually net out and put it quarantine tank for the next three to six months

I wait 3-4 weeks since I'm not that patient lol usually works out for me. I use no meds at all just higher temps since I keep cichlids like 82-84 and I'll add some salt.

That's a very disciplined approach. If I had high dollar tank mates and was adding a fish I would definitely advocate quarantining. Luckily for me, all of my additions this year have been purchased as groups and given their own tank so I haven't needed to do this. I did recently add a bunch of south american growouts together without quarantining but since I was adding them all at once I rolled the dice. I stopped by my LFS about 3 days after adding my red severum to the tank and all the anglefish in that tank had ick but none of the reds. I have been treating with paraguard in that tank for the last 5 days with the water at 82 so I'm hoping he didn't bring any little nasties with him. Going to treat for 7 days and monitor closely.

Yeah I don't want to end up treating the 450 if I can help it (other than salt). And nothing is getting caught in there without it being on death's door so I view it as a quarantine and grow out two for one special:)

Also I promised the wife wouldn't set up any more tanks but this is a temporary quarantine only right:cool:

Ich can be transferred from even nets. So to each their own tank I guess lol

Why would you be buying or have bought in past fish from a place that had tanks with ich in it is more the question..

No offense to you but you proved my point spot on.

If a person is even remotely doing their due diligence (checking all LFS tanks for ich beforehand which takes about 5 min) then you shouldn't be all-consumed with introducing fish. It should be an easy 30 min floating in bag for temp adjust then in it goes.

Unless obviously you bought fish from a LFS with ich in its tanks.. which is unfathomable.....and obviously your own fault.
