250lt Green Terror tank??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Have you considered a Jack Dempsey or even a single parachromis Friedrichstalli or Loisellei. They are slow growers and they dont fill out a 4 feet like a GT or an Oscar.
Jack Dempseys can be shy so keeping just 1 in a tank on its own might be a bit 'boring'.

GTs would be much better choice. They have always seemed very personal/interactive.
What about CA cichlids? Like herichthys caprintis, RTM, loisellie, or Freddy? They all get around the 12" mark and have personality.

Thinking about the tank dimensions any of those 12" TL fish are probably not going to work. Maybe a 75g and up might be better for only one solo fish.
There are better alternatives but some are harder to find. Like h. Deppi.
But what about a nic pair, or salvini? Gorgeous fish with personality IME.

I do like the Jack dempseys says especially the electric blue variations. Hadn't read that they can get lonely on there own. Would one work with some barbs or lager tetras or are they to aggressive.

Jacks can work with barbs and tetras as long as they are large enough to not be eaten. IMO as a single fish Jack's are not the best. I kept them around the time I first started keeping fish and found my angels far more personable. Now of course there will always be an exception to the rule but you do not see a lot of Jack Dempsey "Wet Pets". That is not to say you couldn't have an interactive jack I just dont think its the norm. Mines seemed to want to hang out near the bottom most of the time.

4ft tanks are the worst because they are a little too small for majority of the 10-12in fish and they give a lot of open space to the 6in species. Ideally you would want a fish that tops out around 8in. That would be the perfect sized fish for a 4ft tank. The trouble is finding a fish that stays around that size. Someone mentioned Salvini but they can be on the shy side. H Deppi, H . Bartoni, and I believe H. Carpintis all stay around <10in.

I think GT is a good fit just realize when he starts getting in the 10in range he will make the 75 look a little small and you may need a larger setup. But again they are slow growers so you have several years before that happens.

Aggression wise, they are probably on par with a Green Terror.

I've read many times that JD's do hide quite a lot of the time.
I have one at the moment in a busy tank. 9 Clown loaches, 6 silver dollars and a couple of other cichlids.
I do see him most of the time, but he does hide a lot and is a bit skittish.
If you want a cichlid that's going to greet you when ever you approach the tank, i don't think a JD would be the right choice.

Have you considered a blue acara?
They max out at about 8 inches and look similar to a JD. I don't know much about their personality though, maybe someone else can shed some light on this.

Just get what you want, in any event you have at least 2 years to either upgrade or move them on...

Agree 100% op seems to like green terrors so I believe in that tank set up he can pull it off I've seen healthy happy green terrors close to full sized living in a 55 gallon as long as water quality is high there shouldn't be a problem with a green terror in a 65

I've been wondering that myself. They seem like smaller, less aggressive Green Terrors.

Can anyone comment on their personality and shyness?

Just to shed some light, Blue acaras have a more peaceful deminar then the more aggressive cichlid due to the fact it can get along well with other cichlids. I've had acaras living with firemouths, salvini, severums, and festivums. All the fish listed there have been labeled as semi aggressive cichlids. Green terrors, jack dempseys, Texas cichlid just to name a couple don't really get along well with other cichlids so they're known as higher on the aggression scale
