are our fish edible ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
EDIT: SE PA

You gus realize once you take a fillet knife to these fish and skin the fillets, you're going to have 2 pieces of meat the size of a beef jerky?

lol mmm... im a beef jerky fan too :) i think my bass are prob three pounds at the moment maybe a bit more not sure havent weighed them .
if i was out fishing and caught some large or small mouth the same size they would be considered a good eating size lol and they gonna get bigger still :D

in all honestly guys i will say it again i dont know if i wiil really eat them lol just was wondering

That's perfect sandwich size. Tarter sauce, some lettuce, tomato...
I've cleaned and skinned many different sized fish, and when it comes down to it, the smaller ones aren't even worth it.....there's virtually nothing left by the time you're done w/ the knife

Same way with big catfish. It's like slaughtering a pig.

I cant even count the number of times this was discussed back in the old days of MFK. The general consensus is that you definitely should not, due to the all the aquarium chemicals we use.

Have you ever read the label on your dechlorinator? Almost every one says "not for fish intended for human consumption".

That being said, we did have a few creepy characters back in the day who did it anyway. They weren't highly regarded for doing so.

When I was a kid, the smelt would run in Lake Michigan, and we'd get buckets full. Most smelt were no bigger than the size of giant danios, and after being fried, we ate the entire fish, bones, head and all.
It was also similar with 3" gouramis, and barbs in Viet Nam, most Americans would laugh calling the dish fish heads and rice, but a very important source of protein, and nothing was wasted.
Here in Panama, the local people will gladly clean and fillet a snapper, or mackerel for me for free if they can keep the head and bones.
They make a delicious soup out of what I might normally discard.

creepy characters eh lol ...yes i think i get were this is coming from . and to me its possibly pretty judgmental in all the wrong ways . maybe not though in certain circumstances .
people do raise chickens , pigs , rabbits and so on and so forth . probably some even give them names and what not , and then eat them .
whats worse in my eyes is the commercialization of animal production . even though it maybe needed to support a large population . it gives way for less an appreciation of the living animals we use for food .
that same guy that is judging someone from his high horse probably tossed his half eating ground chicken burger in the trash to make sure he still has enough room in his bloated gut for his ice cream sandwich .

i guess there could be someone somewere wanting to eat his pet for some sadistic creepy reason and would be considered a creepy character .

but thats not what this thread is about , i bought the fish and i appreciate them enough to not think of them as something to be just trashed so maybe one option would be to eat them

Being on this board since 05 you'd be surprised how many times topics repeat themselves. So many people much rather ask the same question aqain instead of typing it in the forums search bar.
