Should I keep trying to ban bowls?

Again, a little devils advocasy, but I do feel this way.
Relatively speaking, to me a 12" oscar in a 55 is about the same as a goldfish in a bowl, maybe worse.
Survival, is one thing, but actual livability is another.
When you compare the awareness that an adult oscar has of its surroundings, and even the room outside its glass prison, with the none awareness of 1" goldfish, the cruelty quotient becomes painfully apparent.
Seeing that goldfish reach almost 10" or larger with enough space and are very aware of people outside the tank and knowing where the food comes in (mine know exactly) kinda voids the statement. A 1"oscar probably isnt much aware either.

I agree, the government shouldn't be involved, and can you imagine what our taxes would need to be to police this kind of stuff.
The majority of farm raised goldfish have very short lives, because they are used for feeders anyway
Education is the key, and fighting the I want it urge to get something too large for the space we have.

Oh do you got a way with language. YES! Education works!
Even on WALMART!

and the Oscars are terribly tuned in. Those goldfish tho..

Why is it that you want Walmart to stop selling puffers, but not other fish? I think they all deserve a chance.
I believe puffercorps also tries to save other more advanced species

No, I don't think you should get bowls banned, I don't agree with them. Educating people why there bad, petitioning retailers not to sell is a much better idea.
Hello; I agree with this
There's lots of people who want the whole of this hobby banned as soon as one part of it becomes banned it will make it easier for other people to get the other parts of the hobby banned.
Hello; This is perhaps the more negative result of your ban idea. It will give those who do not like the hobby more ammunition.

I believe an Oscar in anything less than 100 gallons, is also cruel and unusual punishment.
Should we make it a law to have Oscar police at all LFSs to check if anyone buying one, has a minimum 100 gal tank?
Hello; Very apt analogy. Do some reading on this sites forums and you will find points of view over a wide range of acceptable vs. unacceptable practices. Do you wish to have someone else decide how you run your tanks?

Hello; Not only taxes, think of the list of modifications to our homes they may come up with if some GOV agency can dictate to us.

Hello; YES!

Hello; I cherry picked the above from this thread. To the OP, you have a lot of ideas. This one is not a good one. I will discuss with you about methods of keeping fish. I do not want you or anyone else going to some authority to control my methods. Bad for the hobby. There are already enough people who would like nothing better than to stop personal fish keeping as a hobby.
If you do not like small bowls, do not use them. I stopped encouraging others to take up the hobby years ago due to the very poor results overall. Even with all the bad tanks I have seen over the years, it still does not appeal to me to be forcing my agenda onto others. Give advice - yes. Dictate to - no.

The ban would only stop stores from selling bowls. I wouldn't want it to do any more than that.

Hello; This does not take into account the unintended side effects. Such a ban would set a precident for other bans. I wonder how many people do not like spiked dog collars or dog muzzels? Point being on many topics there seems always to be a cadre of folks who do not like something and are willing to force their opinion onto the lifestyle of others.
I drive thru a tunnel nearly every time I go out. A lot of times some very loud motorcycle will be in the tunnel and be so loud it hurts my hearing. I have to roll up my windows. lets ban loud motorcycles. Lets ban everything i happen to not like.

I get the point about a fish in a small bowl seems cruel to you.

As for the notion that your proposed ban to be limited to only the effect you want, think again. Some years ago the notion passed into law that the property of drug dealers can be taken. Now the authorities can sieze money and property without having to prove you guilty of anything.

What about the use of bowls for things other than keeping fish?

He's not trying to ban a lifestyle. He's trying to ban something that endangers lives of fish.
