Ok cool thanks so where would be a good place to look for suggestions for filtration for the 125 gal

Filtration depends upon the stock you indent to keep. If it were me and I were growing out an arowana in that tank I would want the water quality to be pristine. They will not tollerate poor water conditions. I would suggest building a sump so you can add more media as needed of if you prefer the canister route a pair of FX5's, pair of FX6's or pair Eheim 2262 filters should do it if well maintained.

Ok wow I didn't realize that I would need a tank of that size for the full life of the aro.
OK I guess I need to figure out a new fish as I don't have the space for a 500 gal tank nor would the wife allow me to spend that much for just 1 fish thanks for the advice.

So what would you recommend for the 125 gal that's a predator type fish that would be able to live in it for a year or so till the 300 gal

Nice ya was definitely thinking of settings up a sump just wasn't 100% sure on wich size to go with oh and would a protien skimmer help on a heavily fed predator tank?

Protein skimming does not work on fresh water setups until you get into the pond side of things. Something to do with O2 not being small enough to bind to a protein. Not my expertise at all but the short answer is no it would not help.

For a sump only setup a 40 breeder or 55 gallon makes a nice DIY/budget setup for a 125.

Why not collect your own fish with a barbless hook? Lot of cool freshwater exotics in hawaii
