  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just keep us updated, if you have question just ask.
People here are really nice. Bichirs are really cool fish, J jaws7777 DMD123 DMD123 and Vancouver_98683 Vancouver_98683 those are the people really help me out, they open the door of this amazing poly world to, you'll enjoy it.

Thank you. As you can tell, I am trying to seek advise from those with actual and current experience on the fish i want. The fact that i prefer species specific tanks is just a bonus for me :) I too am on a learning grade when it comes to the large tank filtration stuff and new options for meds and stablizers. When i say about the tanks i had, that was 25 yrs ago lol things have changed a bit. Fundimentals are the same, but this time i will be more informed and will surely enjoy it much more. I appreciate all the help and info and conversations I receive here.
I was out of the hobby for over 20 yrs myself and when I decided to come back I had no clue how much things had changed. Gone were the undergravel filters of old and I kept seeing these weird new cichlids called flowerhorns, and so much more. I started reading every article I could find and lurking on forums taking it all in. The hobby is a lot of fun and Im still learning more every day.

Yes, thank you, i believe i will. I had been surfing around and seeing how the forums worked (im very "non social media" they say. I dont use fb or anything like that lol. MFK seemed to be the nicest and most directly informative site ive seen. The plan is to get direct and solid info first and build what i need accordingly. The info from you all here that i got tonite was more than ive gotten in 2 weeks. Thank you all for helping make this an already enjoyable start on this tank build.
I will most likely find the forum for bichir tank builds here and keep a nice update going (ill figure out the photo upload thing when needed lol)

I always junked that UGF for sand haha :) It is an eye opener after so long, huh? Im glad someome sees it as i do, thats really cool.

I like the tank you have in mind. I used to have a 120 gallon with a 60x18 footprint and loved the size. There is something really cool about the 5', it just is different than most that you see.

When the time comes for fish do you have a local store in mind to get your polys or have you condidered ordering online?

I am ordering mine online. I did alot of looking around and have made the decision to order from liveaquaria.com. seems to be a pretty top notch company. Its the outlet for Drs. Foster and Smith.
Seeing the road of (what i believe is) intended disaster my LFS pulled on my son, i wont buy livestock from them. I tried to tell my kid that he cant mix these fish with those or all ur fish are too much for that little tank. He kept listening to the (ehem) "profesionals" and after months of bs, he finally took my advise and is now happy, but wont go back to the LFS. That place has been around since 1969 and was highly respected last i had fish. Now, its a joke. Who sells someone a 3" dragon goby, a 3" convict cichlid, a 2" peacock cichlid and a common pleco to someone that just said "I got a 25gal hex tank and I want to put some cool fish in it"
My LFS is a shame and forces me to get them online. Shipping sux, but it is what it is i guess.

I too like that 5' length, but i like them 2' wide. Doesnt overstate a room but does make a nice impact when viewed.

A couple of other vendors to consider

The ulimate in polys is Toyin at Rehoboth Aquatics. These are the best wild caughts you can get.... If you can catch Toyin, he is a busy guy.
http://rehobothaquatics.com/

Ned is another seller who gets Toyin's polys and he is quick to get back with you. Good second option. http://unclenedsfishfactory.com/BulletinBoard/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=7197

Aquatic Day Care was good but after closing his retail shop they have been next to impossable to get a hold of. http://aquaticdaycare.com/price-list

One of my favorites is The Wet Spot. http://www.wetspottropicalfish.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=2&Itemid=116

One thing to consider too is that sometimes certain wild caught poly tend to be seasonal as to availability. Im not super clear when those are but you might start up a post asking. One downfall to wild caught is that they tend to be on the larger side and you miss that grow out time as young fish.
