They're not all created equal. You'd be much better off with a dwarf monitor than a tegu.

I'm pretty sure what you want to start with is a Cuvier's dwarf caiman (Paleosuchus palpebrosus). It will prepare you for the more difficult lizards, like Crested Geckos, Leopard Geckos, Bearded Dragons, Blue Tongue Skink, etc.
No I understand that, I jus have heard much much much better success stories with tegu's vs. monitors. again I'd be new to both species so its a crap shoot for me either way.
I've heard, and also seen the aftermath of the florida breeding populations.
Why would you suggest these? I'm legit. curious. Are they relatively easy to handle and tame down?

good god dude...why the hell would you suggest a $500-$1000+ monitor right out of the gate...I googled the name and immediately closed the browser...why.
Yeah, I'd never recommend such a tiny lizard on a site celebrating the MONSTER section of the pet trade. Crocodiles get too big, so those are out. Gharials need a bunch of fish and are endangered. That leaves the American Alligator. Perfect size right up til it starts getting aggressive around 6-8 feet. At that point you call the farm you got it from, they replace it with a baby, and your old one becomes a variety of consumer goods.
Any of the dwarf monitors are good to start. They're expensive, but very gratifying to keep.
