Ultima 2 mechanical filtration

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am not sure about glass beads, but 2 cups cups of sand in a fluidized state. Will bio filter about 20 pounds of live fish.

Spiff44 runs two Ultima 4000s on his 1700 gallon tank with no additional mechanical filtration. (He removed a filter sock) Here's an interesting thread on Ultima II filters. The thing that stuck out for me, is that Ultima IIs are not the best filters for all tanks. You need a tank big enough to handle the amount of water to properly backwash the Ultima. Spiff44 uses 330 - 450 gallons of tank water to backwash his Ultima. Even on a 1000 gallon tank, that much backwash might be a little sketchy. When it comes to Ultimas, bigger may not necessarily be better.

Talk nice to Ken. He's the one who helped my design my dual Ultima 2000/22" BioWave glass bead setup for my 1000g tank.

OMG! Where have you been? It has been years since we've seen an update.

i only use my ultimas for bio and the backwash system so cant give much input.
but i do love my ultimas lol.

How loud are they when running?

none of the system i run ultimas are in the house so to me it silent lol
but when near by i only hear the hum of the pumps so pretty quiet over
all.

Hmm, so no clattering media. Do you think a pair of 1000's would be overkill on a 450?
all.
