and I are going to be deigning an aquarium controller based around the Raspberry Pi 3 for freshwater aquariums.
A raspberry pi is a single board computer. This controller will monitor temperature, run dosing pumps etc. all from a web/network interface.
No. This device isn't just going to break. People with saltwater tanks rely on neptune apex aquacontrollers. It won't control critical systems of the tank and it will be much cheaper to build than to buy for example individually regulated dosing pumps.
