FW aquarium controller

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am busy with other things such as the controller. Is anyone here actually going to use the controller?
Right now I don't see myself having much of a need for one but who knows how things might be sometime in the near future.

I currently use an apex on my reef tank, how would this controller be any different?
It is based on a Raspberry Pi and it will be mainly freshwater focused. It will not have as many features as an apex, but it will be much much more inexpensive. It will control dosing pumps and monitor temperature. We are still in the early stages of designing it.

A raspberry pi is a single board computer. This controller will monitor temperature, run dosing pumps etc. all from a web/network interface.

What dosing pumps will it run? And how will it connect to said dosing pumps?

Im still not sure what this device is really controlling in a F/W system?

Wouldn't an arduino be better for this? The code needed can be found on the internet in parts and the sensors cost £2-£3 on ebay.

Im planning on making a temperature controller with one, in using one to run my aquaponics as well

I use the Digital Aquatics Archon on my tanks to control functions, and while it can have bugs as it is still a newer system receiving updates, gotta say I trust them a whole lot more than a home made controller. With $1000s in fish I need something rock solid. I considered building my own controller for temp, pH and all that good stuff but at the end of the day I decided spending a couple hundred to protect thousands was worth it. Once I have it all in place it will be monitoring two pH probes, ORP, two (maybe more) temp probes, multiple leak sensors, pump control, temp control, ozone control, dosing pumps if I decide I want them and more with wireless access to the system from any computer/tablet/phone on my network as well as out of the house once I bother to get it set up.

It is a neat project you are looking at, but I'm just not convinced it is worth it. If you decide to persue it you might want to take a look over at Reef Central. They've had many builds like yours over the years.
