Is garden hose safe to use for water changes?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
In order to keep garden hoses supple, a chemical agent is sometimes added by the manufacturer. This chemical can sometimes leach into to water. So as a means to dump old water, it is fine. But if used over time, those chemicals can cause a problem if used on the water to your tank. Once or twice may not cause a problem, but regular use may be dangerous to your fish

What do you recommend to use as a way to fill up the tank? I need to figure out something besides buckets or the garden hose. I have no idea what to look for at the hardware store. Clear tubing and some sort of faucet adapter?

You could buy the hose alone like the one that comes with the Python to fill, OR, make your own with the same parts and material. A hardware store should have all that you need in terms of a flex hose, adaptor to connect to your water source/sink.

thank you! that's an awesome set up you have there with the valves under the tank too!

Thank you. I have a "quick connect" attached for ease of connection/disconnect. I use my closed loop circulation pump, by closing the output into the tank and redirecting the water to where you see the hose connected all with ball valves. I recently used one of those "soft/flex hoses" and found that it works well too. I like it since it's more flexible and puts less strain on the PVC connection and it's just lighter.

I have some tanks in my fish room that I fill up with a pocket hose (works great because it collapses and is easy to store)

I also use these "pocket hoses" on 2 of my tanks, along with regular, cheapo garden hoses for my other 2 tanks. I do over 50% w/c twice per week and my stocks are 2-4 years old.

On a side note, my 180 uses regular PVC for filtration plumbing and not the "potable water" PVC

Yes, I use regular PVC too. I plumbed up the tanks before I knew it was controversial.
Oh well, the fish are still alive and breeding, I do regular water changes, so hopefully if there is nasty stuff in the PVC , it is diluted enough.

I use a section of hardware store bought clear vinyl hose for refilling. I put a female garden hose fitting on one end of it and thread it onto the utility room sink. On the sink faucet I unthreaded the aerator and installed an adapter for a garden hose to be threaded onto it. The adapter is made by GT Water Products. P/N is #95-B Looks like this:

I'd be in trouble if that were the case as all my plumbing is with schedule 40 - drains, returns, clc. To be honest I didnt know there was any debate with PVC. I know there was/is for ABS - but even that i made the decision to use a black ABS Tee for my suction end for clc, since I didn't want a white Tee. It's been there for 2 years now.
