Biggest glass banger + wetpet + pred

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
All 3 fish will grow to be super aggressive beasts in your 180- just feed them by hand they will grow huge and in your face. In my opinion it really comes down to your set up and what pattern or color you prefer. You want spots or stripes? You want color? Personality/Pattern/Color IMO you will have more variation with an amph type. Butti's and Jags are just big and mean every time.
Nothing has spots like a jag though. I think Butti's might be one of the fastest cichlids out there. they also call them Hornet cichlids.

I have one and he is a wet pet. Very personal. I rub him down when I do water changes. He has try to bite me, but I also talk to my fish. I have a video I took when I had look two festae to my female trimac. So, I put her on punishment. I divided in the tank with my tilapia buttikoferi. He broke the divider I thought he or she might choke . So I removed the divider. The end results was this video. Bare with me im trying to upload it.

Sorry if this is a hi-jack, it's somewhat on topic... Would either a Midas/Devil or Jag be compatible with smaller tank mates?

I'm thinking a CA 'biotope' (used loosely) with some Convicts would be cool.

You'd get to have a giant wet pet and still get to experience the coolest part about keeping cichlids (in my opinion) - breeding & parental care!

As a bonus you probably wouldn't have any of the usual issues that come with having a pair of convicts, which is; how do I get rid of 100's of convict fry???

A fish like a Jag, which is a true piscivore I believe, would undoubtedly take care of any fry - I guess my question is would they also take care of the parents?

And what about Midas/Devils? I've never kept them, are they predatory? I recall reading that the puffy lips of one of the species was a result of sucking algae off of rocks...

Thoughts?

Again, sorry if this is a hi-jack... It's so closely on topic I didn't feel it would be beneficial to start a whole other thread.

With convicts, it might work if it's a convict pair and the jags/Midas aren't too much larger

Ok. So all of the above species are available, I can get a 10inch male jag, breeding pair of festae 7inch male, some growout midevils (1-2inch), some growouts buttikoferi (1-2inch) Orr some jag x dovii growouts (again 1-2inch). I know a lot of people don't agree with hybrids and I certainly don't but I mean jag x dovii? That's gotta be pretty insane ay?! I believe the seller is using them as feeders but offered me some to growouts and no I won't breed and sell them ;). Cheers, Tom

I like all the options. Have you seen the jag, they seem to be all over the place in temperament.

Agreed all will be cool, butti will still hit 14inch quicker than a 10 inch jag will ime, our UK water is crud tho...
Personally I would get a group off butti and keep the biggest meanest one, they love veg aswell as meaty treats. I've kept festae, they are pretty but not really in your face, I've personally never had an aggressive jag but at 12 inch maybe it was small, ive kept many amphs and although some have been aggressive none have been predatory...the best chance for what you want ime is butti or an oscar, or a manuelli piranha!-)
