Supply of feeders for oscars

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Feed a good quality pellet as a staple with a few crickets as treats, if you want to keep them entertained get some floating plants and put the crickets on them, the oscars will work out how to get them off

I stopped giving them pellets because my oscar died from it, I believe. I forget what it's called but apparently they can't always break down the food when it's very dry like with pellets and it can cause a blockage. I'm not a hundred percent sure that's what killed him, but from the signs and everything else that's my best guess. So with my new Oscars I have been mixing spirulina with flakes and making my own pellets that have much more moisture content.

Never heard of any cichlid dying from being fed the correct pellets, most name brand cichlid pellets will give your fish a far better balanced diet.

Friend of mine that spends a lot of time researching fish stuff. He has been doing it for years. I would love to see some more info about this though...

I heard fish died from eating live feeders or any other source of live stock more often than fish died by eating pellets, even you feed it with lowest quality pellet it will not die or being sick of cheap pellet food.

Oscars really need a balenced diet. A quality pellet does that, and meant to digest easily. If a fish dies from a pellet diet, it's because it's a crappy pellet. An Oscar fed feeders will have health issues. Like Dan mentioned, fish are a very small portion of their natural diet.

Only used hikari gold in the past. Hmm maybe I'm being over cautious... The oscar i had that died was roughly 8 years old and nearly 18 inches long. Tank was great and hadn't fed him feeders in years and no changes to the tank fish wise....

I think im getting away from doing feeders. Still iffy on pellets. Maybe my old fish died from something else... no idea what though. Happened within a few days and he got bloated.
