Platinum Jack Dempsey attempt

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Looking great :)

Good luck raising these ones, apparently EBJD are slightly weaker in general, that may have something to do with the lacklustre energy of the fry?

Ebjd do best with more natural foods ,and seem to have troubles when attempts are made to feed pellets, they are also rather inbred(from what I understand they are also unlikely to be true jack Dempsey but the exact mix is unknown)

Some of them look shiny!-)

Although many believe the EBJD to be a hybrid of Rocio Octofasciata and another fish (some say EB Acara... but then where did the EB Acara come from?) Either way, Jeff Rapps sent mitochondrial DNA of EBJD and wild caught JD to a lab to be tested, and both DNA confirmed that EBJD are indeed 100% Rocio Octofasciata. Why we don't see them in the wild? probably because, as stated above, they are genetically weak and grow at a much slower rate than normal JD's. So they probably ended up as food for the other, stronger fry

...as far as Golds, platinums, and "pinks" - I have no idea what the deal is with them but can only imagine, from this thread, that they too are 100% JD

YankeeJack YankeeJack , you've done an amazing job with these spawns. I bred EBJD for a little while two winters ago but only had two batches. I can't wait to see how these turn out :D

Who said ebjd comes from eb acara? Ebjd have been around since 1986 and eb acara since about 2009 so this is the first I'm hearing of this new Internet rumor that makes no sense. How can mitochondrial DNA test prove anything when it's usually a male ebjd spawned with a female jd? Back crossing to a pure species is the most common breeding method used in early hybrids to promote fertility. "Gold" jack Dempsey are an actual line bred mutation originating in Florida like 2004. They are pure jd, ebjd are not.

I've been told by random people running LFS' here and there and other forums that EB Acara was used... I agree that it is nonsense and never believed it so please don't take it that way. As far as EBJD being a hybrid, can you prove that? If Gold's can be a genetic mutation, why can't blues? Everyone has their own opinion on how it came about in the hobby, but truth is Hector Luzardo was the first (recorded) person to come across the EBJD and he never once stated they were from a hybrid pair but rather a mated JD pair. I'd love to see "proof" of your belief that they are, indeed hybrids...

Electric blue jack Dempsey's is there own genes not some mongal mixed gene and to be truthful eveloution going back 1000s of years they probably all came from the same fish even green Terrors.
