How to limit Convict Aggression?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Before ending my fulminating, I think I should add a caveat, I do believe Oscars to be "the" most abused cichlid by keepers in general, and believe dovii and maybe umbi's (and any Parachromis) to be the most abused by cichlid keepers who should know better.
What size would you recommend for an Oscar?

IMO they would need 125g for one or more for multiple as an adult. Back in the day my friend's dad had 2 full grown ones in like a 200+ gallon long tank and they grew to nearly 15". Dwarfed the rest of his jack dempseys and convicts he was breeding haha. Probably what sparked my interest when I was little because he let us all help him feed them bugs and feeder fish every now and then.

With my fish I try to use a tank that is at least 4x as wide as the fishs total body lenght and 8x as long as the fish's body total body length. If I got another foot long cichlid I'd personally want them in no less than 8'x4'x2.5' (I'm short, hubbys short, tank can't be tall lol).

That's not saying all of my fish are kept this way, my silver dollars and their tank for example do not fit this rule. But as soon as we can afford it, I'd like to get them a 7'x3'x2'.

Anyway that's my ramble about tank size haha

I agree with the Gamerchick, a 125 is about what I would consider minimal for an oscar or 2.

My bf wanted me to get a baby one for the 90 when I picked it up. Showed him a picture and some videos of some massive ones and he was shocked. Told him buy me like a 200 gallon and that was the end of that hahahaha.

agreed, and then take into account non-cichlids like Bala sharks, irridescent sharks, pacus etc

90% of all aggression can be managed with proper tank size.
Any Central American cichlid will need at least (at least) 10 gallons per inch.
So to me, a 7.5" convict needs at least 75 gallons.

Have you ever seen/can you link me a pic of, a 7.5" convict? They are among my favorite fish and I have never seen or heard of one larger than 6". It would be cool to see a pic of a larger one if you know of a specimen

I'd say Bettas need atleast 2.5 gallons to be happy, I have one in an 2.5. and he is fine. Many people hesitate with this size because they say it's hard to heat, I use a hydor 25 watt and is works great!
Bettas have been recorded breeding in puddles made of elephant footprints.........LOL..........
