Alright Alright. Since, It's also an educational forum. aff definition below

( Polypterus sp. aff Congicus )

Species affinis (commonly abbreviated to: sp. aff., aff., or affin.) is taxonomic terminology in zoology and botany. In open nomenclature it indicates that available material or evidence suggests that the proposed species is related to, has an affinity to, but is not identical to, the species with the binomial name that follows.[1] The Latin word affinis can be translated as closely related to, or akin to.

Hao Hao im confused dont the pictures you posted kind of prove or atleast gove a 50/50 shot of more than jist genetics playing a role in the differences we were talking about earlier ? The sp.aff.congicus head shape sort of resembles a pbb... no ?
Remind me again what differences were we talking bout?
Not sure if you remember these photo of the bichirs at Lake Tanganyika (Zambia).
They are all Polypterus sp. aff. "Congicus" aka Giselas Bichir.
Here is what King-eL said:

Not really an actual congicus due to not having a pair of racing stripes on the forehead. Also the stripes on the mid section actually does not go all the way down and actually breaks off kind forming a broken line or close to ansorgii mid section but even farther apart.

Polypterus congicus have twin stripes on the forehead similar to Polypterus bichir bichir and Polypterus bichir lapradei. While Polypterus sp. aff. "Congicus" have circular patterns on the forehead similar to Polypterus endlicheri.

Lol i dont remember what thread it was since we all have like 5 discussions on the same topic going in multple threads but was reffering to you saying you felt that the differences in congi were more genetic than anything. Maybe i confused it... sid you mean differences in my/our congi were gentic because of whats available to us.

So there are 3 different variants/species that are atleast known of ? Thats pretty cool and interesting.

We need boots in the ground !!!! Who going to africa to take a look at all these rivers and water ways !

* Polypterus congicus have twin stripes on the forehead similar to Polypterus bichir bichir and Polypterus bichir lapradei. Body will consist of simple vertical stripes. Headshapes may vary from being tapered or semi squared as depicted in the Japanese sites. Likely genetic traits of the ones we are getting now.

* Polypterus sp. aff. "Congicus" aka Giselas Bichir.
