That's quite interesting. I will have to read through the native goby species to see which ones would ever be aquarium suitable and if possible kept in FW

round gobies, monkey/sand gobies, and toad gobies can be kept in pure fresh, brackish, and marine))) yes, they are tough bastards. that's why they invading US rivers now

I'm not sure if those are found in South Africa. I'll have to see

Definitely invasive here, they're pretty bad in lake Erie. I only fish inland lakes now because of them.

We do actualy have freshwater goby species in South Africa, Awaous aeneofuscus and Glossogobius callidus. Callidus seems to be more aquarium friendly only reaching 12cm vs 26cm. Pretty cool but unfortunately they are found quite far away from me.

I would probably visit the institute of icthyology before trying to collect or keep something like WC gobies one day

I think you should just get a net and go to the river. that's what i did)) i am sure you'll catch something interesting. there have to be some gobies or similar fishes in there

Most of the native river fish in my province are threatened or endangered due to introduced species. And I think it's also Illegal to keep them, I can't find any info. And I don't have a tank for them either atm
