Just curious if there is anyone out there that has experience with cycling a tank with decaying fish food. Just wanted to know how it went and what are the pro and cons to doing a cycle this way.

I cycled this tank with fish food, I didnt have any issues with it. I cycled my last tank with a raw shrimp, worked well also. Its a pro over an fish in cycle, but no pros or cons over liquid ammonia cycling IMO.

Yeah I actually put some flakes and some brine shrimp. It seems to be going well. How long did it take for the tank to cycle?
My friend cycled a small pond using only fish food, my only advice is make sure the water is warm or you'll get nowhere very slowly

Nice! I'll check this out.

I would think using pure ammonia would be a much cleaner way to cycle a tank rather than with fish food which can rot and mold. Granted, I have never cycled using the fish food method, I've always just seeded new tanks with mature media from one of my other tanks. I'm just curious about how much of a mess the fish food or rotting prawn method makes in your tank.

I've used dry food with lots of success. The reason I liked it is because I knew how much food I was putting in (and planning on putting in) every day, so when the fish arrived, I knew exactly how much was my starting point.

Ammonia's also quite nice for it's ease, but in those days I didn't have the metrics to convert ammonia to food, so it was really a guess as to how much ammonia equaled the food needs of my fish.

In later times, I used ammonia, not food, because I had the information to equate food and ammonia. Either one works, and each has some good points.
