New Aquarium Stocking Suggestions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ok will do. It seems to be going well ATM. I do have a 2nd external canister filter on a tank I might put on it if its not near the cycle by this Thur. I have some fish coming in this wen and can't afford to not have it cycled.

You already have some cycled media? Just use that- instant cycle.

Yes, cycled media is the best. You could even just use the biomedia in the canister if you don't want to spare the filtration on the other tank. And then you can throw a bunch of live plants in there too, even if you don't plan on keeping them long term. At least floating ones. They can help stabilize everything and process some of the bad stuff.

What fish did you order? Are you all set on stock or do you still need suggestions?

Thanks for the replies on this matter. Now this is what I have done so far. Added some fish food to the tank it made the ammonia level rise and I'm now also seeing Nitrites as well. I also took some substrate and plants from a cycled tank and added it to it. I do have 2 Filters on my 100 gallon tank so if needed I will take one filter and add it to this new tank. I get the new fish not this Wen but next so I'm planning on keeping a eye on the levels until then. And if need be I will use the established filter.

magpie magpie the fish that I ordered so far is the following

10 Cardinal Tetras
3 Bolivian Ram
3 German Blue Rams
5 Kuhli Loaches
2 Angel Fish "I didn't order these I plan on going to a local pet store and getting the smallest ones so I have time for the tetras to grow." Just to try to avoid the Angel Fish eating them as stated previously.

I know adding this many fish at once may throw off my cycle. So what I plan on doing is adding half and keeping the other half in a quarantine tank. Then adding the 2nd half later in the week.

Do you have any other suggestions of fish I can add to the group? Or do you think this will do?

Sounds good. Your stock sounds fine as well :)

I would just take the filter floss/one of the pads from one of your other filters and put it in the filter you're using along with some live plants.

The fish you're adding are a bit sensitive to new tanks, so you'll want it to be as stable as possible. The best way to do that will be to use your biomedia resource! (And again I suggest live plants.)

I like your stock list - have done very similar combos, though I never did the german blues, only the Bolivians - love the Bolivians as they are very interactive, as are the Angels. Not sure if you have more room but if you are looking for more fish to add once it's stabilized, some marbled hatchetfish would give you something at the surface that would fit your SA theme. (They also like an established tank.)

Well the only problem with taking just the filter floss is the tank I currently have cycling don't have a canister filter. It has a internal filter built onto the tank. So the only way possible to take anything from that cycled filter is to simply take the Filter and add it. Also thanks for the suggestion. I will look into these. I will keep everyone updated on my cycle and when adding the fish. I Hope all goes well.

Getting there! You can't access the internal filter? (I don't know how those work). I've stuffed media pads/floss into HOB filters to cycle tanks. You can't shove anything in there? ;)

As I mentioned, I just worry about the fish you've chosen and having any unstable / unfavorable parameters. They're a bit more fickle and a little less hardy.

This one is actually a fluval accent. It has like a internal canister filter. I think I could put some pads and floss inside of it though. I will add some from my other tank tonight. On the plus side I do have a 30 day warranty with the fish. Lol so if they happen to die I can get my money back of fish replaced.

You can take any established filter media and simply squeeze it into the new tank water. You don't even have to access the filter. You don't even have to look at the filter. You don't even have to look at the filter and make funny faces at it.
