Attempting to grow a large specimen Beani

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This may be an ignorant question - but how are you getting the Epsom salts solution into the fishes stomach with a pipette? Are you netting the fish each time or does it come to the pipette to feed?
The fish needs to be netted each time. The stomach is quite a long way down and the pipette needs to be inside the stomach. Only do this if the fish is not feeding. Other wise soak food in Epsom salt solution.

great thread Andy. can i check what you feed your beanis? i got several rio blanco "san pedro" beanis 2 months ago at slightly less than an inch. they are on nls largely wirh meal worms occasionally.

Thank you for that info Andy. I hope I never need to use that bit of information, but forewarned is forearmed.

All the others in my fish room are doing fine on Hikari pellets. They sometimes get neglected. I put in a few pellets and walk away when I'm busy. The fish I have chosen to grow on is in my house and gets a lot more attention. I started to introduce other treat foods. Think this is were I've gone wrong. To much to quickly, killing with kindness. One or two pics of some of the neglected ones

I've tryed all ways. At moment there all separated because I've not enough time to keep a eye on them. Aggression can change so quickly. As can be seem from pictures. Before spawning and after spawning

Andy, that little female in your last pic looks ready to spawn.
I have found I could keep a bonded pair together, with no other fish in a 150 gal tank, but other than that, they needed to be separated. Even the fry would start killing each other at 1".

Update.. The Beani has made a good improvement. After not feeding for roughly 4 weeks, he is now feeding again. His poo has changed from being white and stringy to brown and stringy. A big improvement. I think in a week or two he will be 100% better. If not now he's feeding I will soak the food in Epsom salts.
