Just picked up a Gar for $12

i never liked it either but Pro-fishermen handle fish that way all the time. Care to explain?
Have you ever hooked a fish in the gills? Think the fish wasn't harmed? I think same thing applies when poking through with tweezers and dental hooks
There's a difference between holding a fish in the soft bones gill plates compared to the gills though man. I agree with the gill plates that doesn't do crap
that's not the same as handling the bony part of the gill plate or lifting it gently to look underneath it
I don't think it's the easiest thing to find. Gar gills aren't the biggest so working in small spaces here. Look at the pic I posted. When I sold all those gars the biggest was 24" maybe even bigger. Even then their gills wouldn't even be able to fit a finger between
i believe they make tweezers with rubber tips to cover the ends for delicate procedures like that
