Frozen food my fish won't eat

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
so you're saying when i go buy a few dozen crickets from the pet store that are bred for the sole purpose of feeding other animals that i can get this worm? I've been using feeder insects for over 30 years and i have yet to see one of those. These pictures are actually the 1st time i have ever seen one
Those are parasitic worms that infect and consume insects and then suicidally drive them towards water when the worm is mature, like a zombie sorta thing.
They infect insects that drink that water so CB insects are safe.

There are some videos on youtube as well.

I don't think protein causes bloat but fat or too much fat can cause problems that causes stress leading to bloat.
In some fish a diet with too much protein is a suspect for bloating. I believe this is in Beani as an example??
If I'm going DIY I try to stick to fish/seafood and insects I don't have to worry about foot long worms crawling out of.
Anything cooked or frozen will remove these 'parasites' you speak of. Simple

I used to believe that Hendre. After a discussion I had once with forum member RD he said that a lot of bloat sensitive fish can handle protein and it's the fat that does the harm.
I have had quite a few difference of opinion with Rd in the past, however he is very knowledgeable about dietary and health issues and I would respect his opinion on such things.

That's interesting. I quite enjoy reading his posts.

The only fish with bloat I have had is a betta that overfed with the initial fish excitement and then immediately cut down after that. I just didn't feed him for 3 days and he was fine

Spinochordodes tellinii

that's the worm in question. Fish as far as I've researched can't be infected by these parasites since they infect crickets, grasshoppers etc that drink from the ponds and other water sources these worms reproduce in. Terrestrial parasites are extremely unlikely to infect fish at all, even if they do spend part of their lifecycle in the water. crickets, roaches and other insects are great for fish and not what I would consider typical land-base protein sources at all. I highly recommend a diet of pellets, frozen tilapia/salmon/shrimp, AND feeder insects for a healthy fish.

You both are being childish at this point.

Omnivorous fish kept with carnivores can have issues whether from protein, fat or what ever I mostly stay away from land protein because what it does to my water. The original reference was human flesh actually. RD has yet to be wrong about anything I've argued with him about. He is one of the more knowledgeable people on this forum.

The cricket was a gif shame it didn't post. It truly is a thing of nightmares
Frank I've had whole shipments come in that I rejected because the "expert" distributors really do mess up sometimes. I'm not sure how many generations of breeding one would have to wait to be sure I'm really not an expert. I have seen a whole lot of nasty there's a nematode or two that's also parasitic I believe
1000's and 1000's of dead crickets or mealworms/super/wax/guppies/goldfish and I have seen sooo many different issues at the time I should've been documenting but I was usually too horrified
While it's true boiling and freezing should definitely do the trick. I don't like the word "should". When they die the worms come out and I'm not a fan of that I'd honestly rather pick the leeches out of the California live blackworms

lol yes I know the initial post was a joke, but since its escalated here I figured I'd chuck my .02 into the mix. I would think RD would advocate the use of insects...I'll have to bring that up at some point.

Freezing will basically kill everything dude. really

it takes temperatures at or below -5 F or so to kill some parasites and bacteria, so not just normal freezing will always be fullproof.

The general rule is to boil the mix and then freeze anyways. It really "should" be safe. I myself don't know enough to contradict my personal instincts regarding this. I know some bugs have eggs that are pretty tough. There's also the whole being a repository for pollutants thing as well.
