Will anaerobic pockets form in loose thin layer of substrate?

Then go for it. The only other drawback I cab think of is that you will get less biological filtration from the substrate, but I imagine you don't care and have enough biomedia in your filter anyway

Yeah I'm currently running and fx6 on my 75. It's filled with all biomedia I don't have any mechanical media other than the sponges inside there so I'm thinking you have a lot space for any beneficial bacteria

I have beach sugar sand wind blown stuff. I don't vacuum, it will go septic if over 1/2" thick.
One of these days I am going to epoxy a sand layer on to some tiles. Maybe a scattering of bigger grains. To keep from having to have water flow make dunes out of it.

I don't even need waterflow to make those dunes in my tank, my Geo do that for me and I like it, it made my tank bottom look more nature than a flat sand bed

I'm with you Yuki, as long as I don't have to worry about those dark spots. I don't have anyone to dig up my sand bed, so I make the dunes myself, but I have a RUGF and gravel vac once a week.
