I think what you are seeing are his sensory pits. Are they equally spaced like his nostrils are? If so then that should put your mind at ease.
Looking at the picture I don't see anything that looks like hith, to me anyway.

Someone else mentioned to me that they might be sensory pits but they're huge.
But they are pretty symmetrical, like nostrils.
