Udon, Soba, and the Noodles

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That's cool, I know someone who had a polleni that beat up a Large GT male, almost killed a Jag X Dovii and killed a threadfin acara overnight.

Yeah I've heard that story from you before, the fact of the matter is you still don't have any experience in keeping them. If I wanted information on them I would be annoyed if someone who had literally zero experience was commenting on them. The internet is already saturated with misinformation and hearsay, and you're just adding to the pile. I like you but you're definitely guilty of this man.

Sorry. I'm adding another persons experience in their absence, I may just change my sig to "take everything I say with a grain of salt"

I'm only trying to add, I'm not trying to pull facts outta my ass. Infact it coincides with the thing of them going after darker fish and I am sure they aren't always maniacal from seeing them coexist well in other peoples tanks

I've done a helluva lot of reading on them (eg, almost obsessive, I have probably read every single thread in this forum with the word Polleni in it LOL) and there are occasional stories of rogue ones like your friend's, but that seems to be the exception.

I plan on getting baby grow outs and picking from a small group and I think that will help, as well as careful selection of tankmates.

Did u see it for yourself ? Its hard to make any generalizations on any fish based on a couple of examples.

What's that, you guys want to see some more medium quality phone photos? OK! :D

Find the Udon in the rope pile. (At one point she was surrounded by all 3.)

One of the ropes randomly spazzed out and kicked up a bunch of crap but I like seeing 4 species of poly in this shot.

Udon is getting girthier, but in a balanced way. I love this about the WC ones - nice heads, balanced bodies that don't look like they have beer guts. LOL Maybe the patterning isn't as perfect or unique as some of the CB though, so you get a trade off.

Some post WC, plant removal, better light shots of Soba, who is just so pretty IMO with the green and the dark chocolate brown. The back of the pec fins are a crazy deep dark green. Gotta work on SLR shots maybe this weekend.

You'll be fine I'm sure of it. Mine like patrols the top of the tank and only chases when someone is like just blatantly in his way or like we've said black or freckled. I don't think they'd give poly's any crap at all. I'm going to find out sooner than later I'll let you know what I find.

Those pictures are fantastic

I'd love to have one with maybe a Heterospilus and a Severum. I think it could work depending on the individuals, but the problem is that they are each from a different continent. :/ I am certainly not a purist. Cuz then a Dat would also be pretty cool.... LOL.... I swear my intent is not to pick from different continents! All my other fish are from Africa! ;)

I also do like the look of the pinstripe Damba, which is from Africa at least. Some of the other Africans are not my cup of tea visually, or they are really aggressive like jewels. Frontosa are gorgeous but like to be in a colony.

Still not sure what I'll do. I have plenty of time to figure it out.

Yeah my tank is going to be all over too. It only looks bad to me in certain cases, like mbuna with amphilophus would just not look right to me. But you never know when you'll find a really interesting mix. I've always kept my polleni with SA and it works really nicely. The only times I worry about it is when it's just downright aesthetically displeasing or if the water requirements are drastically different. But even then with captive bred fish it's really not that big of a deal anymore.

Yeah, especially when you have more neutral water to begin with. Stability and cleanliness can frequently trump other parameters.

I think either end of the spectrum (super soft/acidic, super hard/alkaline) can be more challenging to maintain longevity in certain fish.

I struggle with it a little bit because I do love the idea of having at least a moderately correct biotope. And I 100% see the appeal to that. But I also really want to love the fish I'm looking at, and I feel like it's OK to pick and choose on that aspect of things with an aesthetically pleasing environment around them. Then if no one is super stressed everyone is happy. Of course we're all taking these fish and putting them in glass boxes so mixing continents shouldn't be that big of a deal... pick what you like to stare at and keep them healthy. I keep going back and forth.

(And I also want a fire eel hahahahahaha)
