I put in my vote for JD. My GT is the only cichlid I own that's larger than an inch and it's really not very good at catching fish, or defending itself from similar sized cichlids (e.g. my black acara and mayan). My JD goes crashing into things as it chases feeders and he always shows off his fins. Neither of them bother my other fish, but my JD is about 3" larger.

All fish are individuals so remember what all these folks are saying is more about a trend rather than a rule. Having said that:

I have never seen a JD dominate a GT. GTs tend to be more offensive while JDs tend to be more defensive.

Beauty-wise, its in the eye of the beholder. I mean, which is better looking? An apple or an orange? Same difference with GTs and JDs.

Both can be curious.
Both can be timid.
Both are easy to care for.
Both grow real slow. I *think* JDs will eventually get bigger than a GT but it takes a long long time for that.

I personally prefer GT but I own both.

Super old thread, but you are completely wrong with growth. JDs definitely get bigger and faster.

I'm more a fan of GTs. The coloration is more appealing and they get a bit bigger. Plus JDs are somewhat lazy and skittish. This is just IMO though.

Boy you're so wrong. Depends on the fish I guess. In general outs the opposite.

I vote JD overall but both are great and I would agree looks good to GT but from my experience JD beats out a GT. Then again each fish is different.

Old thread but a good one. I've had both and the GT had a little more 'owner' responsiveness when they were juveniles. Both always greet me when coming in the room however. When they past the 8" mark and mature, they both just meander around the tank casually anyhow and only pay you mind when they are hungry. Both have beauty in their own way. GT is easy pick for me. I feel they have much better personality and are a better wet pet.
I find the GT to be much more active and better in communities. They both can be timid but I found the JD to be much more. While keeping my large JD pair in a tank alone, I found them entertaining, but in a tank with other fish I found them to camp out and not be social even though they were the largest in the tank. Both can be beautiful fish. I think they are neck and neck as both can take time to show full potential, although I personally think the GT will shine sooner. I prefer the look of a GT.

One thing for sure, anytime I go to my LFS, I see many many large JD that customers bring in. Never see any mature GTs.

That's weird, I never see mature JDs bring brought in ever.
