Jaguar cichlid fry

As an fyi, the male ended up breaking through that divider and killing the female. male 16", female almost 13"

Just do not want you to under-estimate the power of a male a jag. breading is brutal as they get older, and bigger. in the wild, he can find another female, and attack all that are not ready to spawn, in a tank, he will kill the female to remove her on hopes a ready female can be found. but offcorse its a tank, there is no other female.

Another question for you since you know so much about these fish. I have 6 of them from different breeders hoping to get a couple of them to pair off from the rest but I have yet to see them doing that. There are smaller ones which I think are the females and then bigger ones that are usually chasing everyone around the tank, there about 3-4 inches. When will I see some pair off or what should I look for? Random question, where did you get that white tank divider that was in your video? Thanks, you're awesome.

I had the same problem when my managuense were spawning. I saturated the market in about a week, and ended giving bags of them away to anyone who'd take them.
As they grow watch for color variations closely.
In any of my spawns, a small number would turn out solid yellow (I thought that was uninteresting at the time) but it seems those are considered more valuable these days.
They must be promptly separated from the group, and raised separately though, as any of their larger brothers and sisters will make meals of them.
I would separate all fry from the parents once the fry started to canabalize the father.
I usually had a few tanks filled with fry that I'd separate by sizes, because the larger fry would always eat the smaller ones, if I couldn't get in 4 or 5 feedings per day. After a while and a few spawns, I would also then just let nature take its course.

yup duanes it gets tedious. the divider is light defuse panel can get at any hard ware store. Its cheep. can cut to size with diagonal snips. use a piece of hose to wedge it in place top and bottom. works great tell the males get about 16" after that something sturdier should be used.

that 125 will only work for so long. they will start tearing each other up. at 4 to 5" it will house 2 at most. down the road it is at the edge for to small for a male, let alone a male and a female. Be looking for a 145 to a 180, just keep an eye on craigs list for the next 2 or 3 months, check it every day one will come up at a good price, be ready to pounce. ideally a 240 be great but that is not realistic for allot of folks.

as for a mated pare per say, they are not like Oscars or JD and other cichlids that way, once the male in full maturity he likes to do his business and move on, I use to drop my WC male in one tank with a female, they do their business and week or to later drop in another tank with a dif female to do his business. keeping him together with any female is not an option, males are roughs, kinda like NBA basketball players.

think I got some vid of the male trying to get the female to mate and she does not want to, it gets pretty brutal on his part. if let to hit he will flail all the skin off her sides. These are F1 from the WC pair. about 13 months old, female a little over 12" male about 15"
